So yes, of course Kyle's reasons for signing on to TR are conjecture on my part, but he has a long history of not being in love with everything Lynch does artistically.

"Kyle M. talking recently about how he enjoyed doing the various roles in the new show."

This is exactly the perks I was talking about. Kyle got the role of a lifetime perfectly suited to his talents. There is no way he could've refused that regardless of the quality of the project. He got his chance to do Orphan Black.

Yes, they are friends but they have always had major creative disagreements. Kyle refused to star in FWWM, causing Lynch to do 11th hour rewrites and casting to replace him with 2 other detectives in lead. There is an interview with Kyle saying that FWWM "damaged" TP - Youtube it. He also vetoed the planned Audrey-Coop romance in S2 and got Lynch to leave out Jeffrey's scripted rape by Frank Booth in Blue Velvet.

You're attempting to re-write/twist things to fit your hate for David Lynch. Not gonna work, some of us know the facts. Don't waste your time. You're in the wrong place for this.

Oh, and Kyle initially turned down Blue Velvet too. My conjecture of him not being thrilled with TR is plausible in view of that history - I never claimed it as fact.

What's also interesting is that before TR, Kyle was never a part of Lynch's classically 'weird' projects. Dune was a big studio film intended to be a Star Wars of sorts, Blue Velvet is shockingly linear for Lynch and the original TP doesn't need explaining.

It's other Lynch regulars that are known for quintessential avant-garde Lynch projects:

Jack Nance in Eraserhead

Laura Dern in IE

Naomi Watts in MD

TR is truly MacLachlan's first foray into starring in 'pure heroin Lynch'

For me personally each second of Season 3 was the biggest entertainment I got from TV series ever. If you think about everything as symbols of development and story... Also it leaves what to think and feel about afterwards. This is how real entertainment should be, to my understanding - for brain, heart and soul. Not some easy eatable, superficial snack, which majority of the popular series are. To each its own I guess

Really like your post. Nice and clear, without needing to get esoteric, you're saying you appreciate the way taking this show in engaged all of you, heart, head, and soul - and did it in a way unique from any other TV series. There's nothing wrong with the formulaic, plot-driven popular shows which make no demands on an audience, TV fodder like NCIS, Bull, - the shows where it would be shocking if every detail wasn't clear at the end. The Return was a welcome relief from that, an elevation for both us and the medium. Thanks!

Ersatz Numen, thank you for your detailed reply - it's great, and I really enjoyed reading it. I can see you feel very strongly about what you said. Who's to argue with our convictions? My reaction to the series wasn't the same since I didn't feel "duped" and my enjoyment wasn't "predicated on the notion that it all mattered," - two key passages in your post pasted below.

It's really good to have such a strongly stated explanation of your dismay, and I'm sure you speak for quite a few other people.

"...I and apparently many others feel duped that we were led to believe we were returning to Twin Peaks.

"I thoroughly enjoyed The Return all the way up to Episode 18, but that enjoyment was predicated on the notion that it all mattered..." - E.N.

I badly wish that Showtime had had the guts to call Lynch's bluff back when he pulled rank in the dispute - and fired him. They should've hired Frost and other original writers and directors that are still around. You know - people that actually like TP and its audience, don't have huge egos, and are capable off producing high quality offbeat entertainment. This is a cautionary tale about indulging spoilt auteurs whose heads have gotten bigger than their abilities.

The solution to your perceived issues with TR is to make it into a clone of Season 2?!?

Shit. I'm so disappointed.

Yours is another passionate, very well stated  post, really making it clear why the ending disappointed you in a rather profound way. My experience was very different because for whatever reason, I had different expectations, but I do appreciate reading your post. Thanks.

"That's a crazier narrative than anything that came out Lynch's head in season 3.  "

Why? Kyle is on record as saying that FWWM damaged the legacy of TP. That's part of the reason he was in it so little. He has also spent years heaping praise on the original TP, saying that it's the best thing that ever happened to him. He also has a rep for being an unusually sane and fan-friendly Hollywood figure. Why would he want to crap on TP fans like this if he wasn't enticed with his first lead role in over a decade? It sounds like Lynch made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

You are just making stuff up. "

You can verify all of it by doing very basic online research. The only conjecture is MacLachan's motivation on The Return. Everything else is on record in his interviews and fan interactions.

But to be fair and honest your conjecture is the basis of your post ..... yea all the info gained from interviews that Kyle loved TP original is great and fine .... but to then take those facts and conjecture of how he feels about the return?  That's a stretch and not really fair to the integrity of the individual discussed ..... maybe he will come out in time and speak for himself.

Link to Julee Cruise comments last night

Thanks for the link - Last night I went to FB and asked Julee Cruise a question, was surprised she answered me this morning. Here's the exchange, starting with what she said in her original post:

Julee Cruise: I'm done. 😎 and I could care Less about TP.

Me: Was the L.A. Times quote bogus - "I will always be proud of this"--?

Julee Cruise: Nope! The Truth, what do you rhink! 😎

Me: Oh, good! - I know I'd be proud too. What you brought to the original series was integral to its mood and effect on the audience.

I asked because I was confused by the apparent contradiction between "always be proud" and "I couldn't care less." Occurs to me that on your FB post here you may have meant that the way your performance was used in this The Return finale didn't bother you as it did some fans.

In either case - Thanks for the reply, and thanks for the music, here comes the future - and, btw, I'm going to be watching my VHS of "Industrial Symphony" again soon. Popped in my head to watch that again as I saw you wrap up the show the other night. - Thanks!

I didn't. I woke up very angry. I've calmed down tonight, the day after. I'm gonna give it another watch tonight. See how I feel.

I was disillusioned at first but after some time to think about it, I kind of see how it needed to be the way it was.  On the one hand I really want to be angry at Lynch for abusing the trust of fans...

I understand some people were disappointed in the finale, ep. 18 at least if not both parts - But I don't understand "disillusioned" - Maybe people new to David Lynch films which always end with much mystery and very little explained didn't understand what to expect. If you think ending The Return is possibly "abusing the trust of fans," you would have to say that about Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire-- you seem to be assuming that people had some kind of right to have everything explained, even though that's never been the way he's worked. -- SO--I'm kind of puzzled.

...but in reality...FWWM didn't end that way.

It wasn't a cut and dry ending...but it had resolution.

Thats why many people, including me, are bummed.  I love IE and MD...but Twin Peaks was different and now, unfortunately, it's more relatable to those movies than it is FWWM.
