Around the dinner table, the conversation was lively. Thank you but for now, the forum has been archived.
Yeah, to be honest I was not an Annie fan so if a Diane/Cooper relationship had been developed correctly I would have probably been on board. But they gave us Annie so I'm afraid that's cannon and we all have to deal with it.
But don't forget they did mention her, she is present in this universe, I think the way it played out is meant to be uncomfortable and present its own questions.

I think Hawk mentioned her to Truman when he found the missing pages of Laura Palmer's diary.

Ah. The whole good dale lodge, bad dale not thing?
She's still persona non grata. Non existeeeeeeeeeeeence
Well and not to mention Dale wouldn't even be IN the lodge and we wouldn't have a DoppleCoop if it weren't for Annie. You can't completely erase her. That would have taken some pretty acrobatic writing to get around.
I've said this before but I think Diane in season 3 is both a bit of fan service and a serves a couple of purposes for Lynch. Diane was not a big deal at the time of the original airing, she's someone that grew in significance over time relating to Twin Peaks theories. So it's natural Lynch gave her a bigger part here. Annie on the other hand was big and Lynch never liked her because he didn't create her. So dumping Annie for Diane serves that purpose. Also, Lynch wanted to give one of his favorites, Laura Dern, a substantial part and it wouldn't be credible to cast her as Annie. So, Diane took on Annie's role. If you look at the purpose for Diane in season 3 it makes more sense if it was Annie instead.
So, in a sense you can think of this as 2 birds, 1 stone for lynch with the Annie/Diane switch.
Honestly all I saw during their sex scene was a repeat of Lost Highway. I thought, Here we go again. Lynch is going to insist on deconstructing this entire beautiful world b/c he's so "hard," as he informed us in advance.
One might expect a man of his age to have further developed his tenderness. Nope. Every happy ending in the show (Coop's return and defeat of Bob, Dougie going home, Ed and Norma) gets 12 seconds of joy so that he can spend 10 minutes in the car towards the Palmer abyss house.
I loved much of the journey but felt the ending was pure garbage.
From Diane's perspective, I would think she'd have a hard time with being in a relationship with someone who looks just like the man who raped her and then turned her into a lodge entity, then manipulated her tulpa. I'm sure she'd be happy to be de-naidoed (great term Brandy) and to see Cooper, but the kiss was over the top for a greeting, especially in front of all those people. It was odd to me.
Everytime I see this thread title, John Cougar Mellencamp goes through my mind.
"Here's a little diddy about Dale and Diaaaaane.
2 Federal Employees workin in the heartland"
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

And Cooper's expression seems to shift. Sometimes he looks like Coop, other times his face hardens and he resembles Mr. C.
I dunno. Two longtime friends who have always had an attraction but never really acted on it AND who shared the experience of being in an extradimensional hell for years...I can see how they'd fall in together pretty quickly.
And they were in those places a LONG time. Dale also seems to know about people and things he shouldn't, so maybe Annie died 25 years ago and he knew that in the lodge. Pretty reasonable in that case to say he's over a girl he knew for weeks at most.

I've wondered about that change in Cooper. He doesn't seem evil in any way, just not as self-assured as you'd expect since he de-Dougied.
