And one tiny bit that satisfied me, as I expected. When doppelganger was burning he didn't wear his black lenses but revealed this strange scary faded eyes. In this case no continuity error!

Hi ella,

But, when you think about what happened to Leland after BOB left him - he was wracked with guilt and desperate to be forgiven - in other words, he was back to just poor, plain Leland before he head-banged himself to death.

The Mr. C we saw burning - (and by the way, not clearly consumed - the flames were subsiding, not strengthening, as we watch him burn) - in the Red Room chair was Cooper now unbound by the beaten-to-broken-bits BOB.  I wonder if he was so stoic as he sizzled because of Cooper's unwavering commitment to Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity.

And justice.

😉

I still don't think there ever was a "real" Cooper outside of Laura's dream.  She met him in a dream.  She was the dreamer.  He was the dream.  All the continuity issues and weird glitching?  That's just how dreams work.

To SXT original post. I have one problem with this explanation.  Why would Cooper be on a mission to change the past and save Laura? I mean the case was solved and Laura was dead when he went to the waiting room for Annie, not Laura. I have just assumed that the Fireman sent him on this mission, and that it somehow relates to all that stuff we saw in Part 8.

I just don't see altering the past as something Cooper  would decide to do on his own.

I don't know why, beyond a sense of duty to the case and a deep rooted feeling of guilt about what happened to the other girls, what happened to Leland, and Leland's request.

Also, there was definitely some kind of bond between Cooper and Laura, as shown in FWWM.  She became his obsession, either through a quirk in his character, or what happened in the Red Room, or what she told him, or a combination of factors.

So, no real idea why but the fact is, he definitely has - or had - the idea to try.

Best idea I have is "Superman Syndrome".  Superman is wracked with guilt that he can't save everyone, every time.  So, when he gets the bit between his teeth, he goes all out.

Maybe he thought saving Laura would undo a lot of the other stuff that happened further on down the line, and perhaps he saw Laura being the key to all Judy's plans.  Kill the bad guys, save the girl, just like any old school video game.

Anyhow, it's already known Cooper isn't great at thinking things out; look what happened when he tried to save Annie.

It seems Cooper's ultimate mission was to neutralize Judy and he needed Laura to do it. Maybe because lodge spirits can't directly intervene (or who know what other reason), Cooper wasn't trying to keep her from dying (she was probably doomed anyway), but to keep her from dying in that train car with the ring on her finger, and so keep her out of the lodge. That's why the camera lingered on the empty lodge chair that she usually sat in.

I don't know. Every possible explanation seems to have holes that can't be filled.

All the continuity "errors" are definitely, absolutely, positively deliberate and I think I figured it out.

In Episode 18 there are two major errors discontinuities, over and above the changing motel, car and names.

For one thing, Coop collects two guns from the guys in the diner and then suddenly, behind the counter, has three to deep fry.  Another is, his car goes from slightly dusty to filthy to clean on the trip.  In the key episode to the whole series, it's unbelievable they'd make such basic errors, given that they appear to have planted so many hidden things and made several obvious "mistakes" throughout.  I don't know about Frost but Lynch doesn't let a thing go by unless it's exactly how he wants it.

I have a feeling these things, plus all the other discontinuities, flashing windows, walking doorknobs and so on through the series are part of the overall mess Cooper made by trying to rescue Laura.  The show itself gives the game away with the strap line "It's happening again".  Yes, it is and will continue to happen until Cooper quits dreaming and gets on the beam.

All the Fireman's words weren't advice, or helpful hints, or cryptic clues.  They were warnings.  "Cooper, stop this nonsense right this minute.  You're playing hob with the timelines and it's so bad even our boiler's leaking, the mice have over run the kitchen and me Missis won't cook me dinner.  Just bleedin' quit, will yer?"

Or, to put it another way:

Those who cannot learn from the pasta are destined to reheat it.  Or something.

Comments, insults, threats, praise, money, gifts, favours and alcoholic beverages to the usual address.

I don't agree. Lynch doesn't do meta. There is no overarching theme or explanation for everything. Lynch doesn't want one.  I believe Cooper picks up 2 guns by mistake during filming that scene but at the fryer the mistake is fixed. Lynch allows these to happen because it gives him inspiration for later writing. It does not mean every error does mean something. Only that it might if Lunch, during editing,  is inspired by it. Many of these things, from the start of Season 1 onward,  don't get resolved. Lynch didn't find them interesting and make use of them.

Other things, like the changing Names, motel, and car, clearly have a purpose. I will post my theories but it will take a while. One thing to note. The car Cooper gets into as he leaves the hotel is the same one Mr. C receives from Jack after locking up his Mercedes. What does that mean?

I have said elsewhere that Coop is apparently not that bright. He relies upon the Black Lodge entities to send him on his time trip backwards after they imprisoned him for 25 years. If somebody locked me up in a supernatural hotel for 25 years, I'd be asking somebody else to help me go back in time to mess with space-time continuum. Maybe Picard??

Gordon, Jeffries, Chet Desmond, they all act like the supernatural can be arrested with a pair of handcuffs. Again, maybe they're not too bright.

They don't seem to learn anything or take further precautions even when Blue Rose Task Force members have basically all been neutralized except for Gordon and Albert.

And if not for Albert, Gordon would have gotten sucked up too.

Even though Briggs is in the White Lodge he apparently does nothing specific to aid them from the other side or give them insight into how to defeat or neutralize their enemies. So he's useless in the end too.
