First, I can't say there was ever a time during this 1st season of the return that I thought "I knew that was going to happen". There were times when things were explained too clearly by Cole, maybe for people who wouldn't pick up on an explanation of something that already happened, an occasional confirmation of a theory, but that's about it. And there were no explanations which seemed trite to me.
That being said, I have zero inclination to complain about the final episode and full-on hope that, whether this is the last we see of Dale Cooper, I won't have any complaints going forward.
This.

Just sad that there was no fanfare witty Albert goodbye. Just, listening to Cole, then, *poof.
Good attitude you've expressed, seems to me. To think this gigantic ball of wax was actually ever going to be fully "explained" would only occur to people who have been hooked on conventional TV series, which are all about plot - plots which are tidily tied up. --I know, I know, we've all heard maybe too much from Lynch fans who are constantly saying "You just don't get Lynch" when people complain about his stuff being too opaque - But really, I don't see how anyone could have expected this new season to be all wrapped up, with the way this season has slowly been unveiled so crazily and in constantly unexpected ways.
I think the first half of the finale, ep. 17, was a bit of a tease. It was the most straight forward, loose-end tying episode of them all - and it was designed to make us anticipate ep. 18 as being similar-- But ep. 18 turned out to be completley different, almost like an episode from a different TV series than ep. 17 - In 18 we were back to leeeeeiuurely Lynch pacing, new mysteries introduced, no specific "answers" offered - Though it's not too difficult to glean that Cooper has tried to change the future, thought he had, and at the very end, discovered it's impossible.
And so forth.

This is a good point, but I won't soon forget: "Has my watch stopped, or is that one of the Marx brothers?"

I don't think he discovered that it's impossible, just that it's not as easy as he thought it would. I don't think his attempts to take Laura home, in the romantic and beautiful way that exists in his head, are finished.

I like that, Caoimhín! For us watching, however, the ending with the horrible scream, the nightmare starting all over again, it's failure for Coop - we probably will never see or know more. So, we're left in the pit!
