I can see how a fourth series might pan out.

Fifteen episodes of Cooper as Richard, carrying out seemingly random tasks. We don't know what his end game is.

Throughout the series, Dick Tremaine is in a room on his own speaking to an unknown person behind a clothing curtain. This scene is interspersed every 2 or 3 episodes. Who is the man behind the curtain??

By episode 16, Cooper/Richard will revert back to the old Cooper again. Fans rejoice. Suddenly something changes and at this point Cooper will suddenly start referring to himself as Alan.

The final credits will roll just after Sarah Palmer reaches into her handbag and pulls out a bag of lamb jerky.

The credits roll to a folorn Dick Tremaine, staring at the camera with a solitary tear rolling down his cheek. He's mouthing the word "Judy".

While Evelyn Marsh's tulpa walks up behind Dick, holding little Nicky's tulpa hand and does  a Laura Palmer scream.

Or are Evelyn and Little Nicky actually doppels?

The lamb jerky really made it for me too.

What would be REALLY great is if she fed her own face, then opened her face and fed the face inside her face!

And they both like "YUMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!"

hahahahaha

That's good enough for me! Obviously a lot would have to fall into place (chiefly a deal with Showtime or someone else), but I'm just glad to hear he hasn't taken a hard line on making this the end. I feel like I'm allowed to imagine where this could go next instead of endlessly tying myself in knots to figure out where this story ended. And how. And why. And when.

Knowing how Lynch is, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear something even slightly encouraging this early. I thought we were in for at least a solid year of "There have been no discussions." Or maybe just "No."

As other people have said, a Season 4 wouldn't have to be anywhere near as ambitious as Season 3. The "family reunion" aspect has been covered (and I'm so glad it has been, considering the cast members we've lost between then and now).

Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern have both gone out of their way to say they'd be on board for more, so that's a great start. Really, Kyle is all you need. The rest can be dictated by whoever's willing and able - and/or whatever story Lynch/Frost have in their heads. There are so many possible threads to follow that it could be a big story, a small story, or anything in between.

And since Lynch won't tell us what the hell happened in Season 3 anyway, he can pretty much start it anywhere he wants. 😉

I think another season was being planned all along.  I think that was the reason for ep18.  That's my theory.  Either way, I'm on board!

Best make a decision soon then as some of the actors and actresses probably don't have many years left in them.

Yup. We just lost Harry Dean Stanton (Carl Rodd) yesterday. Many cast members who have left their marks in TP like Frank Silva (BOB), Catherine Coulson (The Log Lady),  Don Davis (Major Briggs), and David Bowie (Phillip Jeffries), are also no longer with us.

Any new TP series should be shot and screened within the next 2 to 3 years, otherwise we'll risk losing additional cast members who have made TP to be an icon it is today.

I agree. However, the creators have cleverly introduced us with a new reality. This means new stories and characters. Not necessarily any need for revisiting old ground.

Perhaps The Return was like a goodbye song to the old twin peaks, to make way for the new.

Also, Briggs as a head, Jeffries as a percolator, Bob as a blob/ball, etc. I could see Margaret returning as a golden log and Carl as a giant whistle/flute. Perhaps they'd get even more creative. Haha. Bring it on.

Agree with this take. As much as people think The Return didn't have enough fan service, it gave us at least a catch-up with a generous portion of the cast, which Lynch didn't have to do if he was being really heartless. That's what I meant by the "family reunion" aspect. And I'm guessing that's a main reason the season was 18 episodes instead of nine: Lynch decided he was fine with visiting all our old friends, but he wasn't going to take time away from his story to do it.

Anyway, I think we already got our salute to everyone who might be too old to do this the next time around.

I don't especially want to stay in the Odessa Universe (though if that's where Lynch/Frost lead me, I will follow), but I agree this season closed the book on the old Twin Peaks. I think there would always be reminders, and probably a handful of old character who remain relevant, but I think the show is free to move on as much as it wants. Twin Peaks needs Cooper (or at least a version of him) - that much I'm pretty sure of. But the story can follow him pretty much wherever he ends up next.

Lynch-Frost would probably never allow it, but I would be interested in a Twin Peaks spinoff series that gets back to following the town (and assumes it still exists!) which could feature Bobby, Sheriff Truman, Hawk, Shelly, Norma, Ed, Nadine, Dr. Amp!, etc. Perhaps Tammy Preston. Even that asshole Chad. haha.

Of course, in less skilled hands, it could be a total bust, but there's a lot of stories to be mined there.

For purely selfish reasons--I hope they do the next season soon since Kyle is still pretty hot (for my gen at least).
They can start phasing in the younger generation of FBI--Tammy's ok but they need more gusto there. What about Sam Stanley and the elusive Chet? Would Kiefer Sutherland be available? He was awfully good, though underused, in Fire Walk With Me. And maybe a new kid, like a Dale 2.0, someone fresh, who hasn't been through the fire and back.

For me there can be only Kyle MacLachlan and everything new, he played the best. Naomi Watts played well, but as Dougie wife there is no place for her in story.

Ofcourse we will see Sheryl Lee whispering something to Coop ear and her scream. Without it there is no story 🙂

Laura Dern can be or not to be. Without her story still be fine, since she left hotel room.

I see there place for Sherilyn Fenn. Her story can be connected to main plot if she was rapped by Mr C. Good Coop can rescue her, wherever she is.

I don't feel the need to watch Ben, Andy, Lucy, Hawk, Ed, Norma, James etc. itp. Really their stories ended for me. Actors did not play the best, but was fine. I saw old familiar faces and I'am fine. That it. Now I want season 4 focused on Coop story and what happened to him. I want to know if he at last left lodge or still dreaming there. They could reveal what Laura was whispering him all this times to ear. As something as he remembers doing mission.

Here I guess I'm going to let this devolve into a discussion of Kyle's hotness.... Totally agree he looks good, but I don't think he was well served by the look they gave him for the show - same hair color/style as young Cooper, etc. You can defend that, because he'd been in the Lodge for 25 years and maybe certain things about him would stay frozen in time. He wouldn't exactly have a chance to change his hair (and of course the black suit is timeless). But Kyle actually looks better in real life than he did in The Return - with glasses and some gray in the hair. If the story ever picks up in a place where it makes sense - i.e. he's resumed life mostly in the real world - I think the look should be adjusted a bit.

I would watch him in 25 years, if he were 91 I would still appreciate him.

Harry Dean Stanton was a treat to watch at 91. Not an issue of "hotness" (I just used the word because it's easy) but his soul was on his face in every shot. Lynch just knows how to pick them.
