It's possible that Lynch may have taken the name of Sonny Jim from Albee's play, but his use of it goes much further back than the Return. He made a video in 2001 with Eli Roth called Pierre and Sonny Jim:
As one can see, if one watches to the end, it is about a little boy who abruptly loses his father.
Nice. This certainly plays havoc with my thought re the reference to Albee's play.
There was also a Sunny Jim peanut butter company in Washington state. The old factory building burned in 2010. Things never seem to end well for Sonny/Sunny Jims.
I remember the lovely ideas earlier in the series that Janey & Sonny would end up riding off in the sunset with Dale. Anyone still putting money on this outcome? I'd be happy for them, but seems out of place for Lynch. Here's hoping the best for my boy Dale!
If somehow Dale comes back and remembers his life as Dougie Jones, and if also Janey-E and Sonny Jim remain real and in this world, then I have no doubt Dale Cooper will remain in touch with them and be a supportive sort of surrogate father figure for Sonny Jim. That said, his career comes first, and I don't see him settling down in Vegas or anywhere else.

Dale will be fine, Janey E & Sonny Jim on the other hand will soon be dead.

i find ur way of thinking adorable, it made my day.
i would love to see you discuss with lynch: i imagine u asking him why didnt he make coop a surrogate father of sonny jim and instead turned the child into a chair. 🙂

I doubt this. I think that is an easy ending. Wouldn't it make sense if janey-e learned a lesson first?
There's a lot of speculation about Sonny Jim dying in the series, but somehow I feel like that is even too dark for The Return. Yeah, darker than Sarah Palmer even. I think the sadness surrounding Sonny Jim has more to do with his lack of a real father--as if he's a reflection of Richard, what Richard could have been before he went down the path he did. Maybe Sonny Jim is what Richard could have been.
I've always had concern on Sonny Jim's fate as I believe this name is a direct reference to the play/movie Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. In the story, Sonny Jim is the exact name of the main couple's imagery son who they make stories about so people don't know they can't have kids. And the icing on the cake is when the husband "kills" their imaginary son to end the story.
I've been thinking a lot about "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" when it comes to the scenes with Audrey and Charlie. And when you say the husband "ends the story" of Sonny Jim, I think of when Charlie tells Audrey "do you want me to end your story too?".
Sounds like someone just showed them selves into someone else's house. Any speculations?
Our killers arriving at Dougie's place maybe.
the Jones's house dosnt have any of those things... Hutch & Chantall are going there, and i'm worry because Chantall wants to torture someone...

Well, I've seen that story in real life too often, and you're right, the kids are generally pretty messed up. : (

Yeah, that was my first thought as well when Charlie said this to Audrey.

Very possible that she'll go there with that intention. Not clear what would happen since we've seen Janey-E in action against the criminal element already, and Janey-E won.
I think I saw somewhere that it's likely Janey-E who remonstrates with Hutch and Chantal when they come into their home, something like this,
'Who the hell do you two think you are, coming into our home, no knock, no doorbell.'
Hopefully they'll cower in the corner, rather than whacking or torturing anyone.

Hi cyndee,
Not to mention that she will have the rip-the-palm-off-the-professional-assassin with Cobra-quick reflexes Cooper by her side! 😉

What kind of lesson?
