There's a lot of speculation about Sonny Jim dying in the series, but somehow I feel like that is even too dark for The Return. Yeah, darker than Sarah Palmer even. I think the sadness surrounding Sonny Jim has more to do with his lack of a real father--as if he's a reflection of Richard, what Richard could have been before he went down the path he did. Maybe Sonny Jim is what Richard could have been.

I've always had concern on Sonny Jim's fate as I believe this name is a direct reference to the play/movie Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.  In the story, Sonny Jim is the exact name of the main couple's imagery son who they make stories about so people don't know they can't have kids.  And the icing on the cake is when the husband "kills" their imaginary son to end the story.

could this mean that he is imagined (or the entire dougie family is imagined)?

I'd forgotten Sonny Jim in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I hope, for once, it isn't another intentional and prophetic hat tip to a great film...

I want to see Janey-E go out with another of her wonderful, preposterous rants so I hope she's protesting at Chantal and Hutch barging in to go after DougieCoop (who may be good old Coop by now).

I have to say, though, I don't think Hutch and Chantal are worthy of waking up Cooper, except that they're played by Tim Roth and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Yeah... for a good while now I've been leaning towards that Janey-E and Sonny Jim are both manufactured (like Dougie was told by the one-armed man that he was).  This might mean that Diane was lying to Cole and company about Janey-E being her half sister just to get them to Vegas.  This show is driving me to the nuthouse!

thought about the sonny jim killing u mention and remembered Dougie staring at him and breaking to tears... The only moment Dougiecoop had a real/spontaneous emotion. ........

........... ...... Why did he cry when he saw the child? What does he see?

I believe "no knock  no doorbell" would imply a No-knock warrant that means a law enforcement agency could enter a premises without notifying the occupants. Perhaps this would be Agent Wilson attempting to apprehend the correct Douglas & Jane Jones.

That makes too much sense!

All next episodes will have dark and very sad moments. Most characters are hurt/destroyed/disillusioned/lost people. This won't be a joyride.

Look at it from Sonny Jim's side--his "real" father was constructed "for a purpose" and the current "father" is a copy (from his point of view). He's going to be extremely screwed up if he is a real kid.

It's possible that Lynch may have taken the name of Sonny Jim from Albee's play, but his use of it goes much further back than the Return.  He made a video in 2001 with Eli Roth called Pierre and Sonny Jim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY69kb64M_8

As one can see, if one watches to the end, it is about a little boy who abruptly loses his father.

Sounds like someone just showed them selves into someone else's house.  Any speculations?

Our killers arriving at Dougie's place maybe.

Hi Charlie,

Or maybe, Audrey finally goes over the threshold-portal-door that Charlie (no offense ;-)) tried to Tom-Sawyer her across last episode and wakes up in the real word.

Without anyone even having to knock on the door or ring the doorbell.  😉

Ric,

Picking on us poor Charlie's of the world?  Oh Ric, I am so tired, so very tired.  I already pointed out that Charlie is actually Chuck Norris' doppelganger, there is no other possible explanation.

Wow, the things you find out online.  This does add a different level to the use of Sonny Jim as a name.
