When Cooper, Janey-E, and Sonny Jim are going to the Silver Mustang, we can clearly see that the rear numberplate is missing (we never get to see the front of the car, though).

Is this normal for the U.S., or is this another (seemingly) meaningful detail? Other cars they're passing in the road all have numberplates.

It could be that it has temporary plates/registration since it's brand new. Thus it would not have a permanent plate.

That's the logical reason.  In most states the DOL gives a pretty liberal amount of time for the temporary license to expire which in this case would be a paper license affixed to the folded down top window.

Whether Lynch/Frost would exercise a logic-based reason for the absent plates...?

I can't imagine they were trying to hide anything by not showing the plate.  Mr. S's truck very clearly had an Idaho plate.

Idaho plate!  Man, I miss a lot.

My guess is the Nevada DOL had a nightmare of hairy-ass red tape, and this was the film office solution exercised this time.  Of course, now I have to go back and look at every second of previous BMW footage from other episodes, because this is so blessed important.

Lol, it's not that important.  It's really not.

The only reason I noticed the Idaho plate on Mr.C's giganto truck was because they showed it so many times.  It was a little fuzzy, but clearly said Idaho.  I guess Idaho is between SD and WA, so why not..................

And Hutch and Chantal's van clearly displays South Dakotan numberplate 🙂

I don't really think the absense of a numberplate on the Joneses' BMW is significant in any way, but it caught my eye as curious, especially in contrast to the way Mr C and the Hutchenses' cars are shown. The temporary registration theory seems very legit, although I couldn't see any temporary numberplate affixed as well. In my part of the world, driving without a clearly visible numberplate, temporary or not, would be next to impossible 🙂

Well, it's really  not "advised" to drive without the temporary plate.  But like stated by subalpine fir, it's probably taped inside the rear window.  With the top down, you can't see. Actually a big no no in this state and I suspect in other states as well.  But hey, when you gotta convertible, you gotta go topless.

Yes, well, in this part of the world cops are very generally fixated on doughnuts and coffee.  There is much truth in Twin Peaks.

I knew it!:)))

Thanks for your replies folks! Let's hope we won't discover next week that this car is a tulpa of another, state-registered BMW convertible 🙂

(Totally not serious, of course, just a bit amused at the number of tulpa theories around here :))

I kept trying to make out the license number… And I thought it looked like it might've read "SW 51". Like maybe just for fun they were referring to Area 51?

(If so, seems like a throwaway SHOTP/Frost thing.)

I thought it was just a tinted license plate cover on it, not surprising seeing who gifted it.

Zooming in, it looks like it's just a temporary or dealership placeholder tag.

That is entirely possible as well.

I think it is significant. Idaho is the closest state to Twin Peaks, WA (the town is in the northeast corner of WA only miles from the border). It's not unimaginable that Jerry has wandered into the Gem State. It means Doppel Coop is CLOSE.
