In Ep 2, at the Roadhouse, Shelley is talking about her daughter being with the wrong person - and Rene says "But everyone loves Steven"
No sarcasm, nothing.
I find that odd, unless I'm just being very uncharitable! 😉I even rewatched that episode recently and completely missed that everyone loves Steven. I certainly do not.
This bothers me, too. All we've witnessed of Steven leads us to award him a failing grade. That doesn't mean "everyone" in Twin Peaks doesn't know a lot of other history which may or may not ever be revealed.
Basically, Becky, Shelly, Carl Rodd, Steven's dealer and associates, and the audience have inside knowledge about Steven's potential for drugs, rage and philandering. "Everyone" in Twin Peaks maybe sees the darling little hometown boy who graduated high school, and is having a tough time getting started in life--jobs are scarce in a small town, mill long gone, can't prepare for a proper job interview, etc...people might think he needs some latitude.
I get a feeling from him that he recognizes he's got no prospects, he feels he's a fuck-up and he's let everyone down. I'm not excusing or moralizing on his behalf. You see this character around the Northwest a lot. And people do love this guy without knowing everything. And millennial suicides are a thing, here. (another example of my Lynch-making-social-commentary-in-his-elder-years--thing)
I got the feeling he was on Sparkle once he realized it was over with Becky. She was his meal ticket. I think she stole or consumed some drugs he had other plans for an knows he is in big trouble, with the Reds or Richards of the world. But to be honest, I don't think he killed her or himself for that matter. He's a complete loser, no way he could even manage to commit suicide without screwing it up.
Complete loser. I could see that, too. Probably hit an owl and now he's really in the shit.
Got to admit, my feelings are likely seasoned by a complete dislike for the guy. As far as in the shit, didn't see any Dr. Amps shovels there for his use.
