Kind of looks like the oil pool where Cooper got in the Black Lodge/waiting room.

i think it is similar to the scorched engine oil pool at glastonbury grove. whereas the black oil is an opening to the black lodge, perhaps the gold (which we've already seen in connection with the fireman in part 8) is an opening to the white lodge? also, gold is a good conductor of electricity.
