Well, maybe I'm wrong. But I think Cooper's struggle to find himself again is a kind of spiritual quest, and the resolution of that will have little to do with footwear.
Weren't you supposed to put some dirt in your pocket before attempting to access the white lodge? Something to ground you the time/place you were entering from. Shoes make perfect sense here. I'm just surprised this wasn't a more well known theory as it's been out there on Reddit ever since episode 3.

Yep. He's been shown to do that a couple other times, too, I believe, though not for as long.
