I did post a Carl is Awesome post for this episode but that is ok.
Carl is an original Bookhouse Boy and if you read his story in the Secret History one of three children abducted in the woods that came back. Of the other two, one is the log lady and the third passed away in his twenties. They all ended up with burn marks like the major.

It seems they were taken to be protectors for the rest, they seem to guide people through the pain.  Sorry my theory here.

I commented about Carl and Margaret and markings like Mjr. Briggs' back when we first learned Jerry was lost in the woods. I predicted  Jerry would return with similar markings and would eventually relay messages (from the giant joint he was toking   toting) to Hawk and the gang. (Bookhouse Boys)

It would be awesome, at least for the selfish side of me as viewer/speculator...

As we've seen, Jerry looks to be back on the move. He stumbles out of the woods, and Carl just happens to be passing by on his daily trip into town. After Carl notices the markings on Jerry's foot, he goes into action. A string of events unfolds which starts with Carl contacting the Twin Peaks PD... 'ello? This is Carl, I've got Jerry here and he needs to get a message to Deputy Hawk, can you patch us through?

oh, i love this stuff 🙂

I think the 'selling blood' part was a clue that unlocks a lot of the episode, meaning something like dont ruin yourself for something that is not worth it, exchange your 'unpaid work'(what you lack) for something worthwhile.  Carl is sort of a 'godfather' without power, who identifies problems as they develop, stops them from spinning off into destructive excess, and redirects the excess to solving the problem the right way, etc., he is a conduit for electricity, a 'lightning rod' that changes over the excessive fire/electricity, the becoming based on the problem; in the trailer park all come to him looking for 'hot water', he switches the problems around, is now figuring out how justly solve them, rather than just giving 'valium' as he did in FWWM.  Remember the two women at that bar talking about the dating and how it was about to drive their friend insane, Audrey was over the edge, and the guy who broke his house arrest, was nearly killed, then wanted to kill the other driver?  They are 'selling their blood' for something not worth it, putting in 'unpaid work'(ex. Audrey had no father for her kid, now looking for revenge, etc.), then going mad or seeking to make up for their 'lost blood' by doing more reckless stuff or seeking revenge(Diane here, who is also  bent on revenge about Cooper, probably one of the reasons she is in contact with him).

Also, this connects with the insurance/gambling of the last episode: twin peaks has no insurance, they have to sell their blood and their work is unpaid, Carl sees the problem here. Miriam, the one who loves pies like old twin peaks, has no insurance, is going to die unless a rich benefactor decides they will pay it.   Gambling is the only way they seek for insurance, like the guy breaking house arrest and almost getting killed, or Audrey going off into affairs or dangerous situations to make up that her husband ran off on her, that no one 'paid her for her work'....no Carl here, no insurance, it has been done away with...gambling with desire/red now, by directly desiring enjoyment(gold) in everything as insurance(cannot be sad, culture of happiness, etc.), leads to disaster, no rational governance in twin peaks, aside from(Carl), so need to see genuine tragedy(Miriams situation, Richard, way people are acting, Sarah palmer, etc.) like sad song at the end, cant just skip by it, that work is going to remain unpaid and people suffering and dying....then, like the Laura Palmer tragedy, have to take it for the tragedy it is, cannot make up for it like they are doing, by hiding from the pain by 'selling their blood' to have fun, need to face up to it and try to do something....

I think Carl's a good person, and that's why he told the corpulent fellow with the walking cane to save his blood, and his money.

And, while I do like, Carl, and appreciate his kindness to the slain kid's mother in episode, and his ability to spring into action to help Shelly in episode 11, he does have his selfish moments. The nonchalant way he reacted to the young couple's fight (with something being thrown through a window, no less) did not endear him to me much.

Granted, I didn't expected a 90-year-old to go and break-up a domestic fight between two people seventy years his junior, but, damn... call the police or something.

I remember thinking the same thing when I was watching, but then I remembered how often my abusive dad was loudly going at us. People did call the cops sometimes, but all they did was ask him to calm down and then leave. Nothing was ever done about the situation, and it was pretty clear that nothing ever would be done about it.

I expect that the situation depicted here was much the same.

Besides, he'd take it out on us for the cops coming. Maybe Carl didn't want to make it worse for Becky.

"call the police or something." I recall the scene where the switchboard went crazy with incoming calls (all seeming to be from the same location?)

I think that was from when Becky was shooting the door. The crazy traffic jam happened too.

Did you notice the blood on Jerry's hands?

If he hadn't been running like that I'd guess he'd cut his foot off...

Like Mike cut his arm off...

There was blood?

I did notice that he was walking funny, like he had pooped his pants. Surely he didn't cut his own foot off...

In character as Carl or as Harry Dean Stanton, he is an amazing guy.  Superb actor, immensely talented bloke.

Saw HDS with his group "The Repo Men" one night-he's really grounded and approachable.....which is a happy memory on the day I learned we've lost Sam Shepard...I've been crying most of the afternoon.

Carl seemed like a frightened shell of a man in TP:FWWM. "I've already been places. I just want to stay where I am." Of all the surprising changes that have occurred to these characters in the last 25 years his late-bloomed transformation into a saint-protector figure is probably one of the least expected for me. And one of the most satisfying. Maybe he has just made peace with his inevitable mortality, but he has become nothing less than a true badass. I like the way he called that guy over. You're going to take this $50 and there's nothing you can say about it. Carl can sit on the porch, strum his guitar and sing old cowboy tunes for all of episode 13 and I would be a happy viewer.

Glad you brought up his last line in "Fire" - that's what I was going to bring up. In that shot, as he spoke, he was doing the "Lynch Shake" which we've seen recur now and then. In that same scene, someone came briefly to his door, hunched over, covering an eye as if he* was injured. He looked inside briefly, then backed up.

Whether or not the guy at the door has anything to do with it or not, I think it's possible that Carl had at least a serious glimpse of The Black Lodge - that's why he says he's already been places, and wants to stay where he is.

*EDIT: Karen points out in a reply that the figure at the door is female.

Carl is the man and has a brass whistle (and a horrible VW bus).

I also wished he'd done more with the DV, but as already mentioned here, there are often reasons not to.

He knows something is going down.  He wouldn't already have incredibly efficient emergency protocols in place of he hadn't been preparing for a long time.

I could watch the Carl show every week.

He's also one of a few characters who gives you some hope that good may have a chance to defeat evil in that bleak world.

Ah! OK, thanks, Karen - In my memory, I wasn't sure of the gender.
