I've heard the theory about him being the Fireman, and I've made a connection (possibly, in my mind at least) between him and the strange hooded figure that appeared in Season 2 when Major Briggs disappeared. Photos are below in case you've somehow forgotten...
Interested to see what people might think about this.
Taking this theory further, if ??????? is the hooded figure, could it stand to reason that he abducted Briggs? Did he tell him of the events of the Return? Did he tell him he had to come to the Zone and leave the messages? Only just thought about this now... It raises many questions (then again, it could be completely false of course, just speculating).
Which is funny because that scene reminds me of the description of seeing the giant that Andrew Packard had as a 16 year old scout.
Help me out, wise ones-There's some deep myth about that figure being the "watcher at the threshold" or something like that- it appears in one of the books (the access guide?), and is reinforced in Mark Frost's The List of Seven, which echoes some of the Theosophical influences on the mythos of TP. Can anyone help with the references?
Dweller on the Threshold. Per Hawk:
My people believe that the White Lodge is a place where the spirits that rule man and nature reside. There is also a legend of a place called the Black Lodge. The shadow self of the White Lodge. Legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow self. My people call it The Dweller on the Threshold.
Perhaps the hooded figure is ???????'s doppelgänger?
The Secret History also mentions a giant "race" of people, so there may be more than one Giant/????????/Fireman.
Thank you. There is another reference elsewhere, but got it!
Also, I'd forgot about this 'till now, but a similar figure appears in one of the transitions in Episode 23 I think (not sure of the exact ep. number).

I think it could be the giant. Or, alternatively, Major Briggs' doppelganger?
Given that, according to Hawk, all must face their "dweller on the threshold".
