We haven't heard that phrase "The owls are not what they seem" at all. We've only seen the owl ring and the circular owl figure; I mean, to me at least, the winged circular figure Bad Coop wants to know about and which Hawk says, "you never want to know about" looks to me to be just like the owl ring....

But here's what I'm thinking: Don't we commonly think of owls making the sound "hoot hoot," two in a row? And a hoot sounds like "Coo." Two Coopers. Remember that episode back in season 2 when Wyndom Earl (I think) was sending out the random electronic signal that then suddenly contained the decipherable "Cooper"--and we see a similar message on the little papers from Major Briggs, this time with two Coopers. Well, if I recall correctly, in that Season 2 episode, we heard at the beginning whispers of "Cooper Cooper" as we look out at the sky.

I assume Lynch/Frost never had an actual plan for what the owls would be when they introduced them at first. But maybe now they've wrapped it around? Maybe "Cooooo" and "hoot" sound similar?? Maybe my brain is just stretching way too far here. Or if you've got other evidence/patterns along these lines, I'm all ears!

I think the experiment will be closely related to owls.

In TSHOTP, an owl's likeness is likened to aliens. And the experiment looks very much like the typical grey alien.

So I think we'll see a reference soon.

Native American mythology contains understanding of owl as bad omen, death and other not very nice things. There are legends about witch-like horned owl as well:

Ah, thanks. I'm really reaching for a pattern when i wonder if "hoot" could be "coo" in "cooper."...

I've had TSHOTP sitting in my room since the day it came out. I've been a little afraid to read it, afraid it's too Frostian. I think I'll let the show finish first and then dig into it as a spinoff.

I keep wondering if the "giant owl" is going to show up at some point.  References to it in the original series and TSHOTP.  I think I remember something saying they look like owls because their real forms are too incomprehensible or terrifying or something.  I can't remember if I read that, I must have.  Sounds like a TSHOTP thing.  But I'm intrigued by the idea that the giant owl or whatever it really is is still out in the forest.

Maybe Jerry's gonna find it.

Yes it's inferred in TSHOTP. They show a comparison between a stereotypical gray alien and an owl. They liken abductions and sightings of owls as the same thing.

I know Frost likely has a huge interest in UFO mythology so he's probably exaggerated a lot of it into Twin Peaks lore just for the book, but knowing that this is in the background of his thinking process is important to the Twin Peaks story in my opinion.
