Just watched again and the father seemed frozen after Bobby goes over. The whole scene is probably the only one so far of the whole show that has properly confused me.

I'd agree that the scene really built on Bobby's development. As far as sane and responsible go, there is also the silent, watchful and very wise looking Norma there too.
