Albert is perhaps my favorite character. He's much more toned-down than he was during the original run. Not sure if that's because of Lynch's direction, Ferrer's acting choice, or Ferrer's illness preventing him from being more bombastic. Heck, I don't even know if he knew he was ill while filming this.
Anyhow, I think Miguel Ferrer's doing great with the role this time around, and that's why I'm disconcerted to find some corners of the Internet postulating that Albert's actually a bad guy. For several weeks now, I've been reading (and watching, on YouTube) recaps from those who believe Albert isn't to be trusted. It's really bugging me, and I wanted to see what you all thought?
Specifically, in Part 11, these particular conspiracy theorists point to how Albert yanked Cole out of the dimensional rift. Now, I look upon that as Albert showing how loyal and protective he is of Cole. But the theorists postulate that Albert is in-league with the Black Lodge, and didn't want Cole to see too much.
Ugh.
Nah. If that's true, it's even more way out than the idea Gordon is a bad guy. He's a straight arrow; even when it gets him into trouble he'll tell the truth.
Some people get so wrapped up in conspiracy theories that they lose track of reality. Then again, there are still people who think the world is only a few thousand years old, so there you go.
I am trying to think if there is ANY character who has not been postulated to be a secret villain.
I suspect HEIDI!
Who IS this "old man" she is jump-starting?
JUMP-STARTING- that involves ELECTRICITY!
Isn't she GERMAN? The Germans were attempting to develop their OWN nuclear bomb at the time of Trinity!
Episode 18- Twin Peaks/ Man in the High Castle CROSSOVER!
Hitler is Bob is the "old man".
Lose some sleep over THAT!
Nah I'm sticking by my baseless theory that it's all about big Ed and that's why we haven't seen him ? ?

No way he is a bad guy.

I love Albert. He's a straight shooter. Whatever he does, he does with good intentions, IMO.
I really don't want Albert to be bad. I love the Cole-Albert interaction, they seem like such a great team. And Albert seemed very remorseful when telling Cole that he provided Jeffries with information all those years ago. But then there's that strange vision of Laura that Cole had, that seemed to implicate that something's wrong. So I'm unsure, but hoping that Albert is one of the good ones.
I agree.. it's hard for me to believe that he's a bad guy

Agreed. One of my favourite scenes of the entire show. Along with this:
Absolutely not! That scene posted above is one of my favorite from the original. "My concerns are global..." Albert's one of the good ones. He saved Cole from transporting to... somewhere, I dunno, the Black Lodge? Buenos Aires? I think a lot of the good/bad conspiracy theory conversations are misguided. (The Tammy, Cole, Hawk theories also strike me as ridiculous.)
Hello folks! Here's my first post here. I had to join, because the show is driving me nuts. It's packed full of so much! Lynch and Frost endeavoring on a full 18-hour movie, written all beforehand (unlike the original) and all directed by Lynch allows for so much more interconnectedness. I'm completely done pining for the soapy tongue-in-cheek love stories from the original, because there's so much more to feast on here.
As for Albert, he's a prime example of one of the major themes I've taken from the show so far: People have gained wisdom with age. The superheroes (such as the "true men") are all in their 60s/70s, and Bobby has come to that place his pop had envisioned.
So Albert calming down a lot makes sense to me. I mean, it fits in with both reality and the show.
In the original, Cooper was the pinnacle of goodness--until he maybe made that mistake by pursuing Annie (against the giant's warning?), and he didn't have 10,000% bravery in the red room at the end; he wasn't quite "perfect" as Audrey said. Nevertheless, he was the best human we knew. Well, while he's out of the picture, it seems to me that Cole and Albert are standing in. I have had moments of worry that Cole might turn out to be a bad guy, maybe some kind of uber Bob, and I guess Lynch could do that to us, but it would be so so so far from the character he (Cole) has displayed on Earth for 70 years that it would make for a lame ending--and I think Lynch knows that it would be a cheap surprise.
Hence I think Albert was protecting Cole. I mean, Albert's vision was starting to blur too when the detective and Diane could still see straight. Albert sensed Cole was in danger; Cole had asked him to have his back; so Albert saved him. Albert's a good guy, and one of my favorite treats so far was when he met Constance, someone who stood up to his moody sarcasm--and thereby turned him on!
As for Diane: I still can't figure out whether she's good, bad, dealing with battered-person syndrome like so many other women on the show, or what.
Welcome!
Welcome, and a great first post.
If Albert's the true-blue american boy, what's with all the talk about cossacks? 'Splain that !!!
