I think the new season is brilliant so far and can't wait to see what is going to happen next, however there were quite a few flawed scenes and elements in these episodes that kind of took away from my personal experience.
1. Where the F is Julee Cruise?
2. The cartoon tree with the talking blob as "The Arm".. I mean there were creatures in Harry Potter that were more authentic and frightening than that thing.. I almost wanted to laugh at the scene where it is attacking Cooper and shouting "non existent" to him.
3. Although there was some beautiful, iconic scenes in the lodge, I feel that it lacked the much more frightening, creepy, atmosphere of the first two seasons. I enjoyed the part where Laura flies out of the room with her terrifying scream, but I wanted more..
4. The scenes with Brennan and Lucy..I've seen quite a few posts about people talking about how their scenes felt like a parody of their characters, and I couldn't agree more.. it was honestly kind of sad..
5. The CGI was kind of disappointing as well. There were a few amazing scenes in which I felt that it worked but many others where it just really ruined the experience for me. I tried to get my head around it but it just didn't work for me.. I saw a comment on youtube of someone saying that the special effects were his favorite part and that it was "old school done in a new way"..but I still am not convinced. I know in the original series there were a few scenes with cheesy special effects and it worked knowing the time it was set, but with the new season I didn't expect it to be this unfulfilling.
6. The scene with James and Shelly was another huge annoyance to me. I don't recall them ever having any type of chemistry, friendship, or let alone one genuine scene together from the original series. The way Shelly looks at him when he walks in the RR as if he is her long lost love was SUCH a disappointment. It would have been a lot better if it was Donna or two characters that actually had a past.. but Shelly and James?? Umm WTF.. "James has always been cool" I almost spit out my wine.. lol
1) Julee will appear at some point i believe. I really liked that at the end of the episodes there is band playing at the bar. Especially in the 2nd episode the song by the Chromatics has stucked in me.. For the last time... For the last time.. lalala
2) This is so Lynch man, from the moment i saw it i said typical Lynch, i liked it!
3) I would like it to be more dark, but it was quiet enough, maybe later more.
4) I was just happy to see them again together!
5) the CGI didnt bother me at all..
6) Shelly is looking like that another guy who sits in the bar, while James stares at the female next to Shelly who is played by Jessica Szohr. Shelly just tells her friends a few things about James and maybe she is a lil bit happy seeing him after a long time i guess..
Also Donna was my least favorite character in the Twin Peaks universe. i think she won't come back for the new season.
I loved the episodes and i cannot wait for more!
I totally agree about the music. I'm a huge Chromatics fan, and I'm anticipating hearing more of Johnny Jewel's music in the new season.
The talking tree bothered me too. Mostly because of the petroglyphs in the Owl Cave that clearly shows a tall man and a short man together. To me, that meant that there always has been a dwarf and a giant, in some form, for hundreds if not thousands of years. But now... A tree with a talking blob?! When they couldn't get Michael Andersson onboard this new project, I would have suggested that his character or the "evolution" of his character to be left out of the story completely.
Yes!! Thanks for pointing that removed link I don't know how anyone could miss removed link this makes this whole "evolution of the arm" thing even more of a let removed link
removed link I don't know, I do care removed link
removed link While I feel you and your points of view, you have to understand that casting another person to do it would have caused the same -if not more- removed link Michael J Anderson is irreplaceable, but it's 500% understandable why Lynch didn't want to cast him (he did claim Lynch raped his daughter and killed his best friend, Jack Nance, and then helped coverit up). So, it's understandable that the MFAP is gone, and the fact that the evolution is a Sycamore tree is kinda removed link Did hate the voice though, it felt off the Lodge removed link Also, it still should have to talk backwards, that I did not like at removed link
removed link I kind of agree, but not too removed link Mostly what the lodge felt like was missing was the creepy moody removed link I mean, after all, there should always be music in the air, right?
removed link I wholeheartedly removed link Lucy felt as Lucy as Lucy can be, and Andy felt the same to me, also Hawk and the Log removed link I loved the TP characters showing up and wanted to get more off removed link
removed link The CGI was removed link It must be hard for the people working on it to meet Lynch's expectations, Lynhc's fans' expectations, and then again understand what Lynch wants removed link I feel like David himself must have felt frustrated as well during removed link
removed link OMG JAMES WAS NEVER removed link Although, iun 25 years in such a small town people meet, you know? I mean, the fact that during the 90s they barely knew each other doesn't mean they can't be friends removed link I mean, Shelly didn't even have friends -apart from Norma- and now she's at the Roadhouse with her pals having a good removed link No complaint there, save for James not being cool at removed link
Interesting - I think the CGI and the tree are very much David Lynch. He's a painter, and I felt that these scenes were more like moving paintings in a way. Yes, the CGI golden pellet and other things aren't 'convincing', but do they need to be? I guess Lynch uses cinema / TV like 20th century artists started using paint, after all the realism from previous centuries (if that makes sense?).
Shelley has been in Twin Peaks for 25 years without us seeing her. We don't know what she's been up to, but when season 1 started, she'd dropped out of school. At some point (before the show) she and James would've been in school together, and with the passing of 25 unknown years, they might've met again. 🙂
As for Andy and Lucy - they always were daft though. Remember Andy sticking up posters, struggling with tape, or him 'discovering' Leo's shoe? 😛
Like the people whining it isn't just like the watered down TP of ABC, you're complaining it isn't how YOU would have done it. It is David's world and his vision, not yours. If you hate it, no-one is forcing you to watch.
@Karen Paynter: I totally see your point, but let's try not to turn this into "David Lynch's TP-fans" vs "ABC's TP-fans". It's bad enough that this kind of division happens in pretty much every fandom out there (the Star Wars fandom ended up in a sort of perpetual war because of stuff like that).
Actually, this is a chance for people accostumed to a more... traditional style of storytelling, to find out if they like a full blown out lynchan approach - or if they don't 🙂
The only thing thats off for me is how brightly lit the new black lodge scenes are. In the original series the black lodge had this murky almost dim, like a smoke fill bar lighting. The new scenes seem bright. Just seemed off
I thought the current, "evolved" arm was a synapse. Anyhow, I like it.
As for the old v new, I like them both. Currently enjoying the new TP more because it's rawer and there's AFAICT less outside interference.
I don't think Lynch has made a dud yet. Well, except maybe Dune. Yep, Dune is absolute pants. 😀
TP fans vs. ABC-only TP fans- that division existed long before this new show came about.
I like(d) the original ok ( overlooking the royally stupid moments like Nadine on the wrestling team ) love(d) FWWM.
When DUNE came out, I was excited that a quality SF novel ( which I had read ) had been made into a movie. It's OK, but not great ( at least it lead to Dino D. promising David he'd have final cut on Blue Velvet ). Though the scene of the Baron's people having to have a "heart-valve" was right up David's alley.
