Alongside Margaret underneath the red lamp (is its colour relevant, I've wondered - a connection with the red curtained rooms?) there are two telephones.  When speaking with Hawk, the white telephone is used on both occasions.  But the presence of two phones is likely of some relevance... a reference to black and white lodges?  Obviously, Margaret and the log convey helpful, positive, good messages... hence use of the white phone?

Good observation! I'm starting to think the Log Lady is the magician. I think she's the only character with knowledge of the mysterious mythos us viewers are trying to decipher. She's trying to "see" (her intro monologues are very informative) and is between two worlds. She has been crucial to the main story arc, and seems to know even more than she makes known. And the gum she chews is pitch gum, which can be made from trees like spruce or *sycamore.*

From season 1, episode 8:

"Hello again. Can you see through a wall? Can you see through human skin? X-rays see through solid, or so-called solid objects. There are things in life that exist, and yet our eyes cannot see them. Have you ever seen something startling that others cannot see? Why are some things kept from our vision? Is life a puzzle? I am filled with questions. Sometimes my questions are answered. In my heart, I can tell if the answer is correct. I am my own judge. In a dream, are all the characters really you? Different aspects of you? Do answers come in dreams? One more thing: I grew up in the woods. I understand many things because of the woods. Trees standing together, growing alongside one another, providing so much. I chew pitch gum. On the outside, let's say of the ponderosa pine, sometimes pitch oozes out. Runny pitch is no good to chew. Hard, brittle pitch is no good. But in between there exists a firm, slightly crusted pitch with such a flavor. This is the pitch I chew."

Also, of all the characters, why is Margaret the host, introducing us to these episodes with a deep, almost vedantic knowledge? I think she's the key.

Agree she is, and always has been, quite key to the way the story is presented. If you didn't know there were plans many years ago in the 70s for Catherine to act with the log in an educational series "I'll Test My Log with Every Branch of Knowledge".
That might help explain her links with Lynch and her use in the intro sequences I guess in some way 🙂

David came up with the Log Lady idea back when making Eraserhead. Catherine Coulson ( who was married to Jack Nance at the time ) was among his friends helping him make it.

My only hope is that Lynch gives Margaret a proper, respectful and fitting end. I definitely feel he will. Maybe she will also pass into her life and be reunited with her husband. Then it will be up to someone else to carry the mantle of receiving messages from them?

that would be interesting, though personally i think the leland/magician theory makes too much sense. i really like the idea of the log lady being connected to some sort of lodge spirit though
