Did the hum begin the day room key 315 returned? I wonder if the noise really does move around as though it's leading a trail. Possible places it might go are to Room 315, the room where Josie was trapped in the drawer knob, or someplace new and more mysterious.
My suspicion is that it is coming from where the Black Lodge is intersecting with hotel. Also, notice the presence of American Indian artifacts at those corners. 'Something to do with your heritage'.
I thought the hum was a reference to the hum we would hear during the original Twin Peak's score that has been absent thus far.
Is the key (fob) generating the hum? Did the hum get louder and louder when it was getting closer and closer to the hotel?
As the camera moved in towards the lamp, and then beyond it towards the wall...I thought of Josie. Still haunting the hotel after all these years.

I strongly doubt Josie has any part in the story ( Joan Chen is not in the show ).
As I expected, like everywhere the Great Northern uses key cards now.

I know she isn't in the show, but for me, the scene strongly invoked her in my mind, especially as the camera pushed into the wood before cutting to black.
This scene reminded me of the secret rooms Audrey would go into to spy on her dad during work. Maybe the sound was coming from there?
I think it's the key, it's been in the waiting room with Cooper this whole time so must have been affected by that.
I think the hum is Josie trying to tell them to look into the key.
It's a sign that "It's happening again" I think!
I was hoping maybe it would tell us what Ben saw in that room right after Audrey left to go see Billy Zane.
That never got answered.

She might not be a part of the show anymore but when they zoom in on a section of wood you can't help but think of her.
It could quite easily be a reference to Josie.

I got the exact same feeling. In my opinion we will never hear this "hum" again and that entire scene was a Lynch nod to Joan Chen (Josie Packard) who really wanted to return but there was no storyline for her
