I'm sure this has been talked about umpteen times, but now that we've seen the end, I just have to say that the Harry/Frank Truman switcheroo really was just David Lynch being a dick.
I didn't really think Michael Ontkean would make an appearance, but I still hoped it might be a long setup for that. Alternatively I though there might be some genuinely clever twist that would depend on having a "Sheriff Truman."
But it seems the most juvenile explanation was the right one and this was just Lynch's way of tweaking Onkean (again, and again, and again) for not being onboard. When we got to crucial, climactic scenes and it was still being clarified that this was "Sheriff Frank Truman, Harry's brother" ...well, maybe some people found some absurdist charm in it, but I'd had about enough.
After 25 years, there could be any number of reasons Harry Truman is no longer sheriff. You don't even need to kill the character. You can have him retire to Boca Raton. Hawk could be sheriff. But when there's a way to broadcast (ad nauseum) this petty dig at Ontkean AND signal one more time that this is Lynch's show and he doesn't care if you like it... well, I guess there's no way he was going to resist. Verrrrry mature.
Sure.
I also blame David Lynch for global warming and the way pool water dries out skin.
I woke up with back pain this morning. Thanks, Lynch!

Actually, this is probably Donald Trump's fault.
It's just one in a long list of ways that The Return is like the old TP, but different. At a reductive yet fundamental level, The Return is Twin Peaks, only different.

Strange as it may seem, not everyone is motivated by jealousy, greed or the need for revenge.
I have no idea what went through the minds of Frost and Lynch when writing in the new Sheriff - and nor do you - but to assume the worst when you don't know the facts is childish.
I doubt any of the character decisions were made to create petty digs at people. Of course one can't be sure, but there is probably a meta reason. If anything, Lynch would put personal affection or disaffection aside for the sake of his artistic vision. Try watching The Art Life, the documentary of his early life--he's definitely eccentric but petty backstabbing does not appear to be in his repertoire.

SamX, do you agree that people have a lot of raw feelings 48 hours afterward, love, hate, or just shell-shocked? The ability to resist projection is probably reduced, along with other knee-jerk reactions.
That said, I'm sure I'm not going to stop loving this finale. Still in endorphin-release mode.
In Sweden, my generation has always blamed The National Swedish Broadcasting Company for ruining our childhood with all their left-wing propaganda in every TV show for kids they produced at that time. One producer in particular, Staffan Westerberg, has been held responsible for most of them.
Now, I blame David Lynch and his "Twin Peaks: The Return" for not just ruining Twin Peaks as I know it, but also ruining my entire adulthood.
😉
I doubt this was the reason for the multiple referrals to Frank as Harry's brother.
Lynch originally wanted Robert Forster to play Truman in the series, but a scheduling conflict prevented it and Ontkean got the role. This time Ontkean declined (he last acted in the 2011 movie The Descendents) and Forster got the job as Frank.

I do think that the evolution of the arm was probably a dig at Michael Anderson...and rightfully so after the things he said. That's the only one, though, I think.
Yeah, he replaced Anderson in the same role with a tree. (Although I think it's really supposed to be a neuron.)
He replaced Ontkean but in a different role with a much better actor. So.
I don't believe the switch of the Man from Another Place to a tree was Lynch having a dig at Michael Anderson. Go back and watch the Fire Walk With Me documentaries and listen to how incredibly well Michael Anderson understood what Lynch does. He seems impressed and thrilled and enthusiastic about Lynch's vision and the intensity of Twin Peaks, the way it makes us uncomfortable. Lynch has known Michael for a long time, they would have had many, many discussions and he also tried several times to do Ronnie Rocket, with Michael playing the lead role.
The recent comments by Michael are the result of a debilitating illness he has and Lynch would understand this 100%. He knows that is not his friend Michael Anderson speaking and imo the tree is the idea that captivated Lynch to solve the issue of how he could continue the story without Anderson's involvement.

Great comment, agree 100%. Do you know any more about what is going on with Michael Anderson, specifically? Or just generally you know he's struggling with illness and it's affecting him and his ability to work.
I thought they did an impressive job bringing back the show with the difficulties they were going to have considering all the major characters that were sick, dead, or retired. I also understand their need to trim out some excess story lines and characters. I'm sure everyone could think a way they would have done a scene to include their pet favorites but in the end it's ours to watch not to write. He obviously respected Micheal Ontkean's wish to stay retired and solved that problem by bringing his brother into the story. The constant references to Harry showed what an important character he was to the original story. Cooper didn't give his regards to anyone else in the end, he gave them to Harry because he was his Bookhouse brother and he loved him. That's significantly positive, not negative.
I think the only character who became non-exist-ent, if you will, was Donna. And from all the drama I've heard and read about, that was probably wise.
As I understand it, Michael Ontkean lives in Hawaii and really is ill and unable to work.
