I see a lot of theories that rest on things that have not yet been confirmed either way. Sherlock would not be proud!
Here is a list of what is true vs. what is unknown, aka the list of COLD HARD FACTS. Not theories. Not speculation. Just what has been presented to us as true.
Please feel free to add more examples of COLD HARD FACTS in the comments.
- Laura vanished in the forest: true. When she vanishes the sped-up-record sound plays on the soundtrack: true. Why did she vanish: unknown. Where did she go: unknown. Did someone take her: unknown.
- Sarah Palmer smashes Laura's picture: true. Why does she do this: unknown.
- There is a second Diane at the motel: true. What does this mean: unknown.
- The motel and car change overnight: it's edited that way. What does it mean: unknown.
- A character played by Kyle reads a note describing Linda leaving Richard: true. Dale is Richard and Diane is Linda: unknown, there is nothing to confirm that, simply Kyle finds a note and reads it.
- A character player by Kyle finds a woman named Carrie who looks like Laura but has no recollection of her: true. This means Carrie is Laura: unknown.
- Carrie has a reaction when a character played by Kyle mentions Sarah: true. What does the reaction mean: unknown.
- In the final scene right before Carrie screams, a voice on the soundtrack says "Laura", possibly the same audio clip from the pilot episode: true. What does this mean: unknown. Why does Carrie scream: unknown.
- Way back in E3, something bangs on a door loudly, the girl calls it "mother": true. What is this thing that is banging: unknown.
- A frogbug thing crawls into a girls mouth: true. Who is this girl: unknown. What is the frogbug thing: unknown.
- Sarah Palmer takes her face off and is fucked up inside: true. What does this mean: unknown.
- Cole says Judy comes from Jowday or something, says it's some large evil force or something: true. Who/what is Judy: unknown, it still hasn't been identified yet.
- Bad Dale is looking for something symbolised on his playing card: true. What is it: unknown.

No confirmation but the best theory I read about Sarah and the picture smashing was that Sarah is possessed by Judy/Jowday and is angry because Cooper removed Laura from the timeline and took away her death. Jowday wants Laura dead or wants to possess her or both.

She does not wants her dead, she wishes to possess her true. Remember that Bob never wanted to kill Laura he only did when the One armed man throwed her the ring, and Leland screamed "don't make me do this". Because when she put the ring her soul was not his to be taken anymore.
When Cooper took Laura in the BW sequence that turned in colour he prevented her death like we saw in the flashback where there's no girl wrapped in plastic. But he then tries to take her home (White Lodge) but Judy was not done. She takes Laura again and sends her to the other dimension we see in the part 18 where she actually lived ever since. So possessed Sarah was angry because Cooper saved Laura, but then Judy took Laura again to the evil dimension.

to add more of what? more true, false, known, unknown ones? that's not how films work (or life). Most of your "unknown"'s are not unknown at all, they are filled with endless bits of peripheral information. And this is the reason Lynch has received so many awards: for being able to create atypical narrations that explore the human condition, narrations that manage to say far more for this condition than a cliche film or series that feature true/untrue blck and white plots.
I like the list and I always move toward evidence base information. The list also reminded me a a few things that were getting lost in the sea of other information.
However, I don't know that factual based information, what is known and unknown is going to help since this show is far from science. 90% or more of what's going on and what we are experiencing is going to be purely theoretical and emotional.
It seems to be art and art if up to interpretation. As I've said half a dozen times already in this forum, we take what we want/need/choose from art, even if we don't particularly like the art piece itself. We process it and we do whatever works for us.
I don't know if pragmatism toward is helpful or not. Unless that's is what you want/need from it. If that is the case, then Carrie on. 🙂

Yeah, but we don't know if BOB and Judy want the same things. Leland was possessed by BOB--BOB wanted to possess Laura. Maybe Sarah/Judy wants something else....

Very good point.
Hi Brandy, thank you for the reply! No, I wasn't inferring any particular way to interpret the show. I was thinking of the list as a purely neutral and practical resource where people could quickly check what had actually been confirmed in the show vs. what was still unknown. Then from there people can start thinking about their interpretations/responses.
As simple as that!
