Apparently there's a scene in Twin Peaks: The Return: The Missing Pieces where the Fireman says: "Listen to the sounds. Except Lissie. You can ignore that one."

Yeah, I wanted to just turn it off, yet couldn't look away (!). "What if something important happens in the crowd? What am I missing? And, the credits? The credits!" Bravo, Lynch, you won the battle but not the . . . Oh, wait . . . .

If I was booking bands for The Roadhouse I would have gone for:

Scott Walker / Swans / Zola Jesus / Fever Ray / Effi Briest / Connan Mockasin / Pharmakon / Shannon Funchess

Some pretty good choices there! Most people I know have never heard of Connan Mockasin. Great musician. He's probably the reason as to why I didn't hate James' song too -- his vocals are a little bit Connan Mockasin-esque.

If I were to book any bands for the Roadhouse, I would have...

...booked none. Because there still haven't been a performance that I would not rather have replaced for some more meat to the storyline.

Heh. How about bringing back Talking Heads (Stop Making Sense) then? and AC/DC for the sockets?

Talking Heads - The Overload

AC/DC - Thunderstruck

Works for me.

I hate to be a contrarian troll...  but ... (lol)

... what is it that many contributors to this thread dislike about Lissie?

Beyond objections on the basis of preferences in taste, the only other criterion I was able to recognize is the quality of lip-synching...

[Those who object on these grounds might consider Mulholland Drive , where lip-synching in Hollywood is presumed in the audition scene...]

- One forum contributor proposed that there might be "auto tune." If there is, it's used in the traditionally innocuous way, such that its correction of "pitchiness" leaves scarcely any audible trace. (i.e., it's not  akin to T-Pain's hyperbolic use of such tools as a stylistic device...)

My guess, FWIW, is that what's really at issue is that there's a "pop" gloss to Lissie that fans of Twin Peaks or David Lynch might find to be "inauthentic." (we've otherwise seen pretty consistently "indy" artists, whatever that means today ...)'  But this is a pretty cynically "hipster-ish" stance, IMO. And, frankly, an outmoded one given hipster/millenial inclination, of late, towards unironic "poptimism."  We're not in the Hi-Fidelity 1990's anymore. Which, frankly, might be Lynch's very "point." (see below re: generational nostalgia)

...

I, for one, thought it was a kickass pop song.  The second part of the chorus (the refrain, "Wild Wild West") is remarkably close to the beloved Fairlight melody/chord progression in Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill."  This might be by accident, but i'd say it's pretty savvy pop songwriting.

And there's a lot that could be said about Lynch's fascination with/critical stance toward generational nostalgia... Giving us something that looks and sounds like it would be at home at the inaugural Lollapalooza is probably no  accident...

But most of all, I feel that, thematically, this episode needed the sun to come out, so to speak, (our dawning awareness of the ongoing the awakening of benevolent spirits)... This performance as "curtain music" nailed that theme, IMO.  Beautiful way to say goodbye to David, by showing the magical Roadhouse stage to be more than a sorrowful/tragic space.

FWIW , I won't be trying to see Lissie on tour, but I've had the song in my head continuously since watching the episode twice Sunday and Monday evenings.  I'd say that's the surest mark of a good pop song.

[Ok, so maybe the "Running Up That Hill" relationship is tenuous, no doubt wishful thinking on my part (when I sing the melody, my ears can't help but answer the "Wild West" refrain with the little three-note uptick that answers the first half of the Fairlight melody.]

What the first part of the chorus is actually really close to is that of Bobby Womack's "Across 110th St."  Which is definitely a kickass chorus.

SO....   You tell me?

Wild West has been in the air all season, with Dougie's cowboy fixation, with the gangster Bad Cooper vibes, and now with green glove Freddie coming out West to meet his destiny.  And the new edition Bookhouse Boys.

I don't mind the song at all.

As for auto tune, can't say I noticed it in any performance and I'm usually good at spotting it, since it's one thing I insist on never using under any circumstances.  It sticks out like a penguin in the desert, most of the time.

I liked her performance. It was in a different style to the other Roadhouse acts so far. The audio was a bit off though. I think she plays a lot live and might not have much experience miming in studios. Apart from that Lissie rocked!

You think you're alone then you realize you're in it

fear is here to stay, love is here for a visit

well they call it instant justice, when it's past the legal limit

someone's scratching at the window-

I wonder who is it....

Perfect.
