Tammy says in TFD that Diane apperared in the sherrif station from a holding cell when she describes what took place in ep 17. She doesn't say that she first appeared as an eyeless asian woman who couldn't speak....

Is Tammy only remembering another timeline? One we haven't seen ?

I kind of assumed that it was just a matter of that being too weird to put into the report, but I suppose it could fit with the idea that it is another timeline (and I do endorse the idea that there are multiple timelines/realities at play)

What has stuck in my craw more is the whole idea of this Diane. I am potentially prone to one of the theories that has her as an illusion of some kind, but none of them have struck me quite right.

I guess the problem is that, either way, I don't know what to do with Naido. Does she help Cooper in Part 3, or trick him? Why is she in the woods, and why does Andy say she is very important? The Fireman "told" him this, I guess. So, could she be Judy, and the Diane that appears here a trick? I suppose, but it doesn't quite feel right...

To go back to the original question, is it possible that Tammy only saw her once she had become Diane? I would have to double-check the timing of the scene... Or, perhaps Tammy saw her as Diane from the get-go, because she could pierce the veil of deception somehow?

I don't know.

**side note**

Turned on the TV and Jurassic Park was playing.  So we started ad-libbing all of Laura Dern's dialogue.  It mostly consisted of "F You, T-Rex" and "F You Sam Neill" and so on.

Ok, carry on.  🙂

Cameron's post has me thinking; it seems like there was some general feeling at first that Mr. C was the danger to Naido, but Andy et.al. were keeping her safe, and she was freaking out when C showed up for that reason.

Then after some collective reflection I am reading more favor for the notion that The Fireman re-routed C against his intentions via trollcage and swipe-left to place C where he would be defeated, or where there were forces to combat him at any rate.

That leaves Naido's presence awfully mysterious, just as you're saying in that post above if I'm taking your meaning correctly.   Who was coming for her that wasn't instead actually sent there by the very same Fireman who compelled Andy to protect her?

So was C trying to get to her, or was he tricked into her location?  What's the Fireman playing at here?  I see what you mean, is she Diane, or is she Judy?

Perhaps she was a beacon, a conduit of sorts, enabling the Fireman to have a portal available there at the sheriff station.  Or maybe she could only get out of the purple place if a person came in to fetch her (Andy), but then still why would she be in danger?  Or was that just what Andy needed to hear in order to unleash his Lucy on Mr. C?

I think it has to be the different timelines.

We were all gobsmacked to see Coop and Diane kissing like lovers in ep 17. Last thing we knew before that was he was madly in love with Annie!

A fair point.  He certainly didn't seem to be holding a torch for Diane whilst with Caroline and Annie.  And then he was gone for 25 years. So yeah, seems a little abrupt to share instant passion.  I think I didn't fully embrace your theory when you first wrote that these many weeks ago.

It just has to be different timelines. Clearly Coop and Diane fell in love somewhere/sometime that we're not privvy to.

That would make for a weird trashy novel.  Or creepy fan fiction.

The Naido/Diane scenario is probably the thing I struggle with most in The Return. I can't reconcile that and Diane becoming Linda and Naido panicking in the purple room or why Naido was in the forest, and naked for that matter too.

The only thing I can propose at present is that Fireman sent Naido to be found and brought to the sherriff's station because he knew Coop would need her assistance on the next stages of the plan (she was never in danger because Fireman had sent Freddie Green Glove to defeat Mr C/BoB). But even that doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny.

On a side note, I do find it interesting that our Damn Good Dale did nothing to defeat Mr C/BoB, instead it was left to Lucy and Freddie. Don't know how significant that is but it does put me in mind of facing the dweller on the threshold with imperfect courage.

First off I would like to give a shout out to the genius of Joseph McMurty and the "via trollcage and swipe-left" comment. Had me damn near falling out of my chair (don't judge me).

Second, there has been much comment in the past about how bad part 17 was.  Is this still the same general feeling.  When I watched it again a few weeks ago, I was reminded of just how....odd.....that whole episode was. Yes, odd, a word that would normally be synonymous with anything David Lynch and yet I use it to show how it was "odd" even for (or in spite of) DL.

I'm running with an entirely new theory...

Star Trek had Mirror Mirror , in which Kirk, Spock, et all found themselves in a mirror universe where their evil counterparts were, well, evil. Aka Dopplegangers.

I posit that there is a world that resembles Earth, but is much darker.  The dopplegangers we see in Twin Peaks are all from that place, each one trying to grasp the right kind of power to make it into our world.

It is in this world that Diane and Cooper were lovers (if you want to call it that), but perhaps they went by the names Richard and Linda.

The Red Room would be the "between two worlds" that is made famous from our magician poem.

Somehow Diane was thrown into the mirror universe (black lodge) and her evil counterpart (doppleganger - the one that says "f you gordon" and "f you albert")) was brought forth into ours by Mr. C.

Further, Diane's tulpa (naido) was "helped" into our world from a second waiting room (I'll toss out that the red room was the waiting room for the black lodge and that the colorless room was the waiting room for the white lodge) and when Mr C. and Bob were destroyed, the tulpa (naido) of diane dissolved and transformed her back into diane.  Where this theory falls flat is that somehow the "mirror universe" cooper has to get into our universe somehow to get all smoochy smoochy with diane, and I can't make heads or tails as to when / where that would have happened because clearly it's not the doppleganger cooper (Mr. C), nor is it any of the cooper tulpas (dougie jones or hybrid cooper).

Damn, now my brain hurts and I need some coffee and donuts...

Does one make a tulpa of themself, or is it only done by a third party?   Mr. C made Dougie to be a sacrifice, we assume, but then Lois Duffy gutshot her own tulpa who had committed murder.  Did Lois make her to do dirtywork?  Who made Diane?  Maybe real Diane did.  Maybe a person makes a tulpa of themself to get out of some serious trouble.  Maybe real-real Diane is the girl standing at the motel, none other.

Brian I like your train of thought there, but I balked at picturing a tulpa dissolving into the original person.  Of course every tulpa expired in a slightly different way, so maybe so.

🙂

17 was super wtf.  Like a guest director from Dragon Ball Z or something.  Why like a video game?  BOB was implicated in molestation and murder and all sorts of dark dark dealings, but then he's defeated by satire and goofery.  Seems out of place on top of bizarre.

Much as I like Freddy, why?  An Cockney with a kitchen glove.  I do like saying 'snapped his Gregory" though.  We have tree cutting loppers and I call them Cindys now.  I'll get the hang of it eventually.
