Since reading the part about Audrey, I've been wondering: 1) why she wasn't more shocked to wake up pregnant, and 2) why she never had anything to say about the father. Now I have a theory on that. Not saying it's definitely the intended explanation, but it would explain some of this and it's juicy. 😉

The first part is easy: Audrey had consensual sex with someone shortly before her coma and she assumed he was the father. It's not like we'd be shocked if Audrey wasn't a virgin.

But if she thought she knew who the father was, why wouldn't she try to involve him or even name him? Well, this would make perfect sense if the man she had sex with was... the real Agent Cooper. In this version of events, that relationship we were teased with was consummated after all.

Remember, Audrey had very romantic ideas about Agent Cooper as this idealized white knight figure and how a relationship between them would be "forbidden love." (She practically swooned at the idea.) So if she thought he was the father, it would be VERY like Audrey to martyr herself by never giving up his secret and raising the baby alone. She would love being that tragic figure and knowing his reputation would be unsullied because of her.

No real ideas on what led to Audrey's sudden seclusion (hospitalization?) four years ago, but maybe something happened that finally gave her some inkling of the truth.

Hi Sonia,

Well, it seems to me that if Audrey was going to suspect anyone of impregnating her, it would be John Justice Wheeler.  After all, I don't think they were examining the upholstery when they boarded his private jet together.  😉

However, the fact that she kept her Special Agent's picture in her salon all those years is a pretty good indication that she somehow figured out (wrongly, as it turned out) that Coop was the pop.

I thought the fact that she had a salon was interesting, too.  If I remember correctly, the last shot we saw of Audrey was in front of a make-up mirror.  =:-O

😉

Yep, for sure Audrey could've been doing it with Wheeler. 😉 But I don't see the motive for secrecy if he was the suspected father of her child. (I mean, they could've been using protection and all.) The way it's described in the book, Audrey seems both determined and content about not involving the father. To me the explanation is that she feels she's keeping silent for a good cause—i.e. not involving her adored Special Agent in a scandal.

I do of course wonder how it affected her as the kid basically grew up to be Satan. Would she at first blame her own family's genes? She certainly knew her father was capable of some fairly awful stuff.

And yeah, good catch on the makeup mirror! Probably doesn't solve the mystery of her whereabouts, but I like it. 😉

This is a difficult one since hospitals tend to test women of conception age for pregnancy when they are admitted and can't tell anyone either they are pregnant or not. It should have been known that she was not pregnant when she was in the coma. But then who knows. I don't like to think she thought it was Coopers the whole time unless she had some sort of recollection or idea of being raped by Mr. C.

Alas, I have no idea.

Right, that's definitely valid. Realistically, the hospital knew she wasn't pregnant pre-coma. The question is, who else knew? Apparently, hardly anyone: If this were widely known, it would've been easy to conclude Audrey was raped in her coma and that would've been a terrible scandal. The book doesn't indicate that it was. (And the writer of the dossier doesn't seem to draw that conclusion either.)

Did Audrey herself know the truth about the timing? Maybe not... if the hospital covered up. THEY knew she wasn't pregnant pre-coma, but possibly they chose not to reveal it to avoid the fallout from letting a patient get raped in intensive care.

One more thought on this is that Doc Hayward doesn't seem to know. In his Skype chat, he mentions "Cooper" coming out of intensive care but it doesn't sound like he's put two and two together. Take that for whatever it's worth. (She wasn't pregnancy-tested after all? Someone at the hospital kept it from Doc Hayward too? Dunno.)

I'm getting pretty far afield here, but even if you don't buy my theory about real-Coop and Audrey having sex, there are some separate issues here about who knew what, especially the hospital.

Since Audrey was only in the coma for a few weeks, the hospital may never have have known she was pregnant.

I don't know how much time elapsed after Wheeler left and the bank explosion, but Audrey - and Ben - would have assumed he was the father. If I were Ben and learned Audrey was pregnant, I'd call Wheeler. And surely Wheeler would have heard about the bank explosion from Ben or someone else?

Wheeler didn't strike me as someone who'd leave Audrey hanging, so something must have happened to him.

Ben said Richard grew up without a father, so did Audrey lose custody of him when she married her accountant?

Of course with Coop changing the timeline so Laura didn't die, none of this probably matters lol.

Wheeler's purpose was being a consultant to Benjamin, so I think he is in Twin Peaks regardless, but Audrey never would've been smitten with, then rejected, by Cooper (since Laura didn't die), so she might not have run to Wheeler for solace. Ahhh, confusion abound. Hahaha.

This is surely irrelevant, but impregnating a woman and then disappearing forever is just what Billy Zane's character in the film Orlando did one year later... so it does happen, at least when Billy Zane is involved.

In the Twin Peaks world, I would guess Audrey knew by dreams or nightmares.  Let's say she has nightmares about what was actually happening while she was in a coma and wakes up horrified but not completely surprised that she's pregnant.  Not only that but she knows the real Cooper would never do that to her so she still hangs his picture so she can keep the better version of him in front of her as long as possible, just kind of hanging on to hope.

Cripes, I'm glad Norma got a happy ending.

I don't have mine either but for different reasons.  We can read it together at a hopefully not much later date Buttercup. 🙂
