We didn't know harry had a brother either. I assume it wasn't important but may be in the new series.
True, Shelly was a bit removed from the mystery of the first 2 seasons. She was a part of many of the sub-stories that won't carry over to season 3. Most of the people in those sub stories never really knew what was going on in the Laura Palmer-Dale Cooper main mystery. Even when Windom Earle approached Shelly, Audrey, and Donna, they never understood anything about his significance or how he was connected to Agent Cooper. Shelly always seemed stable, despite her mess with Leo. But it is true, she is just about the only one of the characters with no defined past or origin.
Wasn't she making eyes at Red in the bar that night, in an early episode this season? She sure knows how to pick them hehe. I wonder if anything will come of that--it could connect her more to a main plot line that could unfold around Red and Richard.
Doesn't anyone miss Leo Johnson besides me? I think his mother is still the one who does the casting.

Leo was used as a red herring in original show as a suspect of Laura's murder. Like Hank, he probably eventually died one way or another.
I think if the Becky character becomes more important then so will Shelly with it appearing to be her mother

I recall reading something on the wiki about her having an aunt, but no mention of any other relations. I assume she was enrolled in TP high school prior to marrying Leo (as all the other teen characters know her or know of her) so what was going on?
The best I can figure is that her parents were out of the picture (whether through death or unfitness) and she was placed with this aunt. The wiki also says that the aunt died shortly after Shelly's marriage and Leo had "expected an inheritance". Either way, Shelly's family was 100% out of the picture by the time the show takes place. (This is, of course, assuming that what I read on the wiki is correct).
Some of us have watched original TP many, many times. I do not recall anything about an aunt. Can anyone point to such a scene?
Honestly, I don't recall anything in the show itself that mentioned an aunt any of the times I've watched through. All of that was based on this page of the wiki, and who knows how correct that is. The paragraph that mentions the aunt does have a footnote that cites The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer but 1) it's been a while since I've read it and I don't recall too much, and 2) I don't think the book is technically "canon" with the show anyway.
I really only mentioned it as a possibility. I suppose it would make sense, or at least alleviate some of the confusion, but who knows how far off the fan-edited wiki could be.

I think that was in Secret History, so I don't know if it's canon, but I can't imagine they're going to bring him back either.
As for Shelley's parents, her terrible taste in men could be due to an abusive upbringing or similar and she may have been a runaway. I could see her running off with a trucker, trying to get away from abusive parents, only to end up with abusive Leo.

Hank likely died, the character will not be in the show, may not get mentioned, just like Donna may not even get a mention ( not in the story ).
I always felt that Shelly's parents were estranged by her actions. I would rather like to know what happened to Leo. Is there a source for the quote where David Lynch said the SHoTP is not canon? I'd like to know.
The quote was his response to an interviewer asking about the book being tied to the new show.
They co-wrote the script so there were ideas they agreed on.
