I'm at work, so I can't exactly get it word for word. But when Briggs returns to the sheriff station, he is obviously still under alot of pressure after escaping from Windom Earle, and it comes to a point where Cooper (or someone else) asks his name, and he says "Judy Garland?" and he starts talking about protecting the Queen. Now obviously at first thought, you would think that the whole queen thing just relates to the Miss Twin Peaks contest, but is he talking about Judy instead? I don't know if anyone else brought this up yet or not. But I was thinking about this all day and I was curious what your guys thoughts was on this.

There was a theory based on this that Judy referred to Briggs, but I think that was basically debunked by the last few episodes of the Return, etc. Interesting to think about again at this point. I may have to watch that scene again before engaging further, though

I never gave "protect the queen" much additional thought but it deserves a re-look as much as anything else. I suspect it's entirely referring to the issue that was occurring at that time of the show, but yah never know.  Judy, Mother, Experiment, and now the Queen. Aye Caramba!

OK, so when he stumbles upon Hawk, he says, "Which way is the castle?"

Cooper asks if Windom Earle did this to him.

He replies, "Garland? What an odd name. Judy Garland?"

Cooper asks again if it was Earle.

"He was God, I suppose."

Then he says, "The woods. They were lovely, dark. The King of Rumania was unable to attend."

It is later in the episode, when Cooper discovers that the map indicates the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, that Briggs mutters, "Protect the queen. Fear and love open the doors. How does the queen..."

That last fragment in particular has me thinking he might not be talking about Miss Twin Peaks as Cooper thinks. I know that's where we started, but I wanted to check the precise text, and found it interesting to do so.

Didn't glean any particular insight from this, but I did find it interesting:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_I_of_Romania

I was snooping around on the Twin Peaks reddit page, and I came across that Judy Garland was actually the actress for Wizard of Oz and they had a theory that Judy could be the dreamer, just like she was on Wizard of Oz, not sure if I believe the theory, but it is still an interesting one.

Just posting again, because I was excited about getting into this theory, but the JUDY spam bot ruined it for us.

There a lot of allusions to the Wizard of Oz in Twin Peaks, to be sure, but I think the notion that everything is some particular person's dream is overly simple. What I can see is them playing with the ambiguity, which is also there in the Wizard of Oz. (Did Dorothy go to Oz, or no? - we want to believe that she did, much like we want to believe in the Twin Peaks mythology, rather than the notion that everything was just the delusion of a guy named Richard)

I haven't read a worked out version of the theory in question, if it is there on reddit, but I imagine the idea would have to be that Judy/Sarah goes to sleep at the end of Part 8, and the rest is her dream (?) But, then, the Woodsmen stuff, etc. happens before that, and so on.

I'm not likely to buy into it, either, but it something interesting to think about, if you want to discuss it further.

I'd be more apt to give the theory more credit if Wiz had an evil Dorothy skulking around causing general mayhem and confusion. (wouldn't that have been COOL)

Just to add regarding the idea of the dreamer, I don't think its a literal thing per se; it's not a Bobby in the shower on Dallas moment. I always took it as like someone who sleepwalks through life waking up and seeing what's really going on under their nose. Someone becoming enlightened, or 'woke' I suppose in current parlance.

One thing, though; Coop's face when superimposed over the goings on at the sherriff's station - an out of body experience?

related to that scene; i still don't like that cooper suddenly fell in love with diane.  he went into the black lodge to find annie.  one would think she would still be in his mind, not diane.
