Each coin had two sides...antagomisms. TP is loaded with them - people and their doppelgangers, Black and White lodge, evil vs. good ... Probably just a symbolic reference

Maybe it is just a visual reference helping the subconscious to FEEl the link in-between the different storylines. Maybe it came from the first line of Bob's poem in the pilot, and maybe it is regarding bet/luck/fate, isn't it strange that we link "fate" to a piece of metal that has a specific monetary value and it is, in this world today, the first (and sometimes) only interaction you get to have with a stranger?
I'm not high.

The money/coins are about profiting from social-ethical exchange, linked to theme of gold and brown(losing from social exchange), golden brown.  The young girl finds the (golden brown)penny left by the woodsmen in front of the convenience store, thus begins to take profits from her relations with the boy, begins to manipulate him subtly and has the 'knowing powers' of Mr. C(knows where he lives in some explainable way).  Also, red uses silver(power, silver mass forming from fire of atom bomb, etc. to control take solid form from the chaotic void, harness the fire's power) dime to take profits from Richard to himself, humiliating and destroying him in the exchange, letting him know he will be getting the most money and enjoyment, and has the power, takes the power from within Richards body to himself, puts his dime in richard than takes it from his right hand.  Richard then in the brown, directly to gold without solving the problem, on top again, has to run the light, etc. to cover up the failure, like a woodsmen always needs a light to hide that he is burnt....

Hawk and his nickel: getting a breakthrough/profit/clue from exchange with log lady-unexplainable forces accidental clues, etc., which lead to the truth of the situation. log-intuition that is not fully explainable gives a clue, old agent cooper's method here(tibetan intuition, throwing rocks, etc. will give all clues), which of course failed, leading to cooper's downfall because cooper didnt know atomic blast was at the center, but thought this intuition was full self-sustaining always guaranteed to produce truth, accidents always lead to the truth, etc., an atom, guaranteed reality of twin peaks where there is always justice, well atom bomb is laura/philadelphia....

they are an indication/prelude to Bob/his species.  Much like "Got a light?" is to Fire Walk With me.

After all episodes are complete, we will probably be able to accurately determine what "Heads up"or "Tails Up" indicates
