What is with the pennies?

Has anyone noticed that pennies keep reappearing?

Hawk 'uses' the penny to find Laura's pages.

The 'magician' Red (Getty) uses the penny to play magick.

The girl finds the penny on the floor.

Are the pennies good or bad luck? What is the meaning behind them?

I've been thinking about that too.

I've seen a lot of posts, both here and elsewhere mentioning alchemy as a possible motif in Twin Peaks, so I looked into that.  Pennies used to be (and are still commonly considered to be) made of bronze/copper, which is alchemically tied to Venus, and so would symbolize women, love, beauty, etc.  It also has ties to youthfulness and healing.  I could see this pertaining to the girl, but not much else.  Someone who has more than my cursory knowledge of alchemy may have a better idea there.

Following a different path, there's also the historical significance of copper and bronze, being the first metals mankind really had control over (for weapons, tools, etc.) and thus having "ages" named after them.  This could maybe tie in with how Lynch said that the passage of the past 25 years is supposed to have a great deal to do with this season, as well as the generally confusing timelines we've been experiencing, particularly this past week.

And then there's also the fact that copper is commonly used in electrical wires, which we know to be a Big Deal for our Lodge-dwelling friends.

So the Woodsmen was a noted Lincoln Impersonator. So I think Lynch is saying Penny / Lincoln important. Or just playing with image.

That's correct. I think the only notable penny so far has been the one the girl found in part 8, the other coins shown were different denominations as you pointed out.

So you meant the ACTOR who plays him, not the character.

Hawk drops a coin. It draws his attention because it's a rare indian head nickel, and he thinks of the Log Lady's clue. He has some giftedness, so he feels draw to turn and look at a part of the door which has the co. name. Now he feels drawn to investigate the door further, leading him to the pages.

In the dream sequence of the  Internatikbal/original pilot, Bobs poem rhyme begins with "Heads up, Tails up" . . .

Probably a good place to start

Pennies, niquels... it doesn't matter. They're coins

I've been thinking about it too, but I'm not sure that it means something deeper than a recurrent topic that links all the season.

The money/coins are about profiting from social-ethical exchange, linked to theme of gold and brown(losing from social exchange), golden brown.  The young girl finds the (golden brown)penny left by the woodsmen in front of the convenience store, thus begins to take profits from her relations with the boy, begins to manipulate him subtly and has the 'knowing powers' of Mr. C(knows where he lives in some explainable way).  Also, red uses silver(power, silver mass forming from fire of atom bomb, etc. to control take solid form from the chaotic void, harness the fire's power) dime to take profits from Richard to himself, humiliating and destroying him in the exchange, letting him know he will be getting the most money and enjoyment, and has the power, takes the power from within Richards body to himself, puts his dime in richard than takes it from his right hand.  Richard then in the brown, directly to gold without solving the problem, on top again, has to run the light, etc. to cover up the failure, like a woodsmen always needs a light to hide that he is burnt....

Hawk and his nickel: getting a breakthrough/profit/clue from exchange with log lady-unexplainable forces accidental clues, etc., which lead to the truth of the situation. log-intuition that is not fully explainable gives a clue, old agent cooper's method here(tibetan intuition, throwing rocks, etc. will give all clues), which of course failed, leading to cooper's downfall because cooper didnt know atomic blast was at the center, but thought this intuition was full self-sustaining always guaranteed to produce truth, accidents always lead to the truth, etc., an atom, guaranteed reality of twin peaks where there is always justice, well atom bomb is laura/philadelphia....
