Ray left "Phillip" a message. This suggests that Phillip(Jeffries?) doesn't know what Mr. C is up to.

 

THE KEY->the spiritual connection to Mr. C=the spirits coming out of nowhere to perform this blood ritual and then a blob with a face coming out of his stomach. The key to what? 

Given the emphasis on this in the narrative, think Hitchcock Rules in story terms, i.e. the bigger the thing in the frame, the more importance it has to the story, then one answer is there has to be pay off down the track for that kind of set up. So I'm confident we'll find out what the key to this is, albeit that it might take the remaining 10 parts to get there.

Another answer based on what we've seen so far seems to be that there is more to Ray than we first thought and he also has a seemingly independent relationship with Phillip Jeffries, sufficient to be complicit in wanting EvilCoop dead. I'm left with the impression that they, Ray and Jeffries (assuming it is the Jeffries we saw in FWWM) had underestimated EvilCoop and are only now realising that there's something afoot which is making their overall intent more challenging than they thought. 

In the absence of part 9 til next week, I could go on speculating, but I really ought to go outside, and talk to people, face to face. 🙂
