Lynch is a big fan of symbolist art, as we know (heavy on atmosphere, lots of windows, small doors and lamps).
Did anyone else think that the island over the infinite purple sea (maybe the White Lodge) was a nod to Arnold Bocklin's Island of the Dead? As a prolific painter, there isnt a chance in hell that he isn't aware of it.
I thought it was a nice nod. The painting has been copied many times (HR Giger did quite a nice version)
I like to think that this is Lynchs version.

How about the scene where the 1950's girl goes into her house? Total nod to Edward Hopper's Summer Evening. Great use of lighting in those black and white shots.

Even this "New York Movie" looks like the Giant's theater? I'm pretty sure they did a pretty obvious Nighthawks reference but I can't remember if it was in this episode or if it was the corner of the RR diner.

David Lynch's '70s drawing "Mr. Jim's Home by the Sea" bears a strong resemblance as well.
Is Carel Struycken, currently still credited as ???????, actually Mr. Jim living by the sea?

The Air is on Fire is a great collection of his work, and my copy has three CDs with DL talking about the book, more or less page by page. I need to go back to it again and see what else we can find that might provide us with more fun in our appreciation of a true artist, i.e. one that challenges, frustrates, annoys, woos, fills with awe and all the feelings, good and bad that is art's raison d'être.

The Giant's theater definitely reminds od Mulholland Drive's Club Silencio.
