My theory about what's missing.

After watching this episode, I have a theory about what's missing and how Hawk's going to find it. Let's review the clues, shall we? Something to do with Agent Cooper is missing, and the way Hawk will find it has to do with his heritage. I postulate that the room key Jade just mailed back is the thing that was missing. It belongs to Agent Cooper, and it's been missing along with him for twenty-five years. I think that Hawk will read the story from The Secret History of Twin Peaks about Chief Joseph (who is Hawk's ancestor according to the book) escaping capture by sneaking through a waterfall. If that waterfall is the same one that the Great Northern is built on, then that will lead Hawk to the hotel, where he will ask Ben Horne about Agent Cooper. Ben Horne will have just received Cooper's old hotel key in the mail, and tell Hawk about it. Hawk will then realize that the key is what was missing, and he will go to the place where it was mailed from. This will eventually lead him to Dougie Jones, and the good Cooper. I'm curious to know what everybody thinks of this theory. Am I off my rocker, or am I on to something? Is there anything I might have missed?

That's a damn good theory. Almost makes too much sense to be right.

How perfect is it that the "key" to the missing piece is an actual key 😉 you rock

I like it.  I'm not totally convinced about the waterfall and all that, but I feel like you could be onto something with the key.

The only thing is, I'm not sure how the TP folks will know where the key came from.  But even if they don't know, someone at the Great Northern will know that the key has been missing for 25 years--possibly because they don't even use those keys anymore, or because the design on the key fob has changed, or who knows  . . . .  And the Great Northern is the most likely place for Audrey to show up, if she's going to--I can see her still working for her dad--and she'll probably be the only person at the Great Northern who will remember or care that the key belongs to the room where Agent Cooper stayed.

I too thought about that key as what's missing, but couldn't figure out how that has anything to do with Hawk's heritage. I haven't read The Secret History. Thanls for the info!

But my guess on what's missing is still the diary pages. But that too is a mystery how it's linked to Hawk's heritage.

I thought about that being the missing piece too, but really there's not going to be any way to tell where that thing was mailed from. Unless they do a print check on it which will turn up a bunch of people at that point.

Does the United States Postal Service just mail away a key without any postage?

I think it will just come COD, meaning the hotel will pay for the shipping once they get the key. I think it was fairly common practice back before the magnetic keys because people would probably leave them in their pocket and not know how to get it back to the hotel.  The hotel would want the key back and would make it as convenient as possible for people to return it to ensure they would.

That's what I was thinking - surely they'd at least affix something to it indicating the post office that received it, or even put it in an envelope?

You're right. I had forgotten about how it used to be. This means that they probably will know from where it was sent from.

And now when I'm watching it again I can clearly see the "PLEASE MAIL TO.." -sticker on the back.
