Laura orb significance

Having read theories and many, many posts, I'm still unsure how Part 8 when the fireman sends the Orb of Laura to Earth, plays a part in the overall show. I felt that we were led to believe Laura is special and necessary to defeat evil (Judy) but is this ever explained in part 17 or 18?  My head is spinning.

Thanks for your responses in advance

Yes, I'd be grateful if someone has a theory about this. If we're being honest, all of Ep 8, from beginning to end, screwed badly with the cosmology as we thought we understood it up until then, e.g. Leland's account of how he was possessed by BOB, the possibility that Sarah was possessed too, and Laura - who is not exactly "angelic" at any point in the show. So if she wasn't there to defeat evil, what was that all about?

Very succinctly put! Hopefully someone can shed some light on this subject for us

The whole Laura is the One thing is the weakest part of the mythology. Lynch knows how to represent absolute evil but he doesn't understand absolute good. Even the white lodge is black. Guess his imagination is stuck in darkness.

Thank you for confirming I'm not crazy and missed the explanation in a previous episode.

I think the overall message is that even someone created to be a force of good, if put in the world without proper care, is subject to corruption. Also, the past dictates the future: even when Cooper went back and seemingly created an alternate timeline, Laura was corrupted.

The thing is - and this can be taken from the whole of Lynch's work - doing good, loving and understanding each other takes much more work than harming others in order to succeed in your life. It would be a fairy tale if love won, fair and square, in the end. The darkness is always there, it's inside all of us and it takes active collective effort to fight it off. One Cooper can't do it on his own.

Laura wouldn't do it on her own, having grown up in a household where she was systematically raped by her father from the age of 12. The thing is, Laura was meant to be a beacon of hope, and yet, evil got there first and extinguished the light. No wonder she was all over the place.

According to the logic of the cosmology there should be a balance between good and evil. If evil is unleashed in its absolute form, there's no space for absolute good. There is only hope, and we keep on hoping.

I always thought it was more like sending Laura in response to Bob, as the one who would set off a chain of events, which we have now seen culminate in Bob being shattered to pieces. So, not the Laura somehow represents pure good or something, but that she was at the center of this narrative.

The question then is how did the Fireman get her? I never bought the notion he was creating her there. When Laura disappeared from the woods in the finale,  perhaps she got sucked into vortex near Jack Rabbit's Palace, and that completes the circle.

Or something. I don't know. Just spit-balling here.

A completely bizarre thought, but what if the Fireman created all of Bob's victims or intended hosts?  We see the Laura orb being created and the gold cloud the Fireman used to create it is still active after Dido sends Laura to Earth.  We don't see other orbs being created (99.99999% likely because there weren't any others created), but that doesn't mean others could not have been created.

Maybe the Laura orb was not a unique thing.

I don't think the orb has anything to do with Laura being good. I started a post about my thoughts: http://welcometotwinpeaks.com/discuss/twin-peaks-part-17-part-18/the-gold-orb-and-the-frogbug-laura-not-all-good-sarah-not-the-motherexperiment/

How I perceived this, is that Laura actually is the child of Bob and Judy. As "the Secret History of Twin Peaks" confirmed, Sarah is the girl in New Mexico that gets inhabited by the frogmoth. At the Trinity explosion site, the androgynous experimental model gave birth to Bob, which stands in my opinion for the male form of evil and Judy, in the form of an egg that after 11 years births the frogmoth. As Hawks' map explains, it is the endgame of both forms of evil to spawn and reproduce. As Hawk states, when that happens, it will be 'the end of the world.' It is also shown at the beginning, when the Double shows Darya the card with the dark sign. When the Trinity explosion
