Twin Peaks is the first TV show I'm watching in a very, very long time, and probably the first (and last) one which makes me so anxious about the finale 🙂

Whatever happens, though, we'll always have the amazing Episode 16!

Man, seeing some of these made me forget how disappointing some of the finales were.

Breaking bad, every episode that season was awesome finale worthy

Lost, eh. I was convinced it was what it was. The ride leading to it was worth it though.

Mad men, brutally awful ending.

Six feet under, watched a handful of episodes, but damn that last episode was perfect.

Dexter, entire last season was a waste.

Cheers, still possibly my favorite finale ever.

Sopranos, bittee sweet. There was no "perfect ending" imo. The one they used was good.

This one. It's almost 10 pm here in Holland and the finale will air at midnight. It'll be 2 am when it's all over, so I'll probably be a mess tomorrow at work.

I thought it was flawed but got the big things right. Parts of it felt lazy or slapped together (Peggy, Stan, I'm looking at both of you). But I thought Don got the right ending. Too many people wanted him to change in ways he'd never shown himself capable of. It was more fitting that he really didn't change but seemingly found a way to survive for another round of this life thing we're all battling through. It was a little bit sly, a little bit exasperating (at least for the idealists), but at the end of the day it felt true.

I won't say anything about the person who got the saddest ending (on the off chance there's still anyone who plans to watch and hasn't yet), but I thought that was a grand slam. The shock and poignancy of it took the whole thing to another level.

This is the only one.  I have never been so excited (or nervous) about a show or finale before I highly doubt I ever will be again.  Unless we get a season 4!

I watched few of the shows you all mentioned, but I definitely enjoyed the ending of "Hannibal", also because I have a friend who watched it all at the same time as I did, though not together, and we were pretty stoked.

The LOST finale is a particularly dear memory because I watched it with a bunch of friends and we had a Dharma Party. Pity I don't have the pictures handy, but maybe I'll find them and post them later, otherwise our level of nerdiness is hard to understand. Sadly I've grown mostly estranged from those friends. I'd give anything to have a similar experience again. I guess they grew up and I did not. Or I grew old too fast.

(I had no problem with the finale, BTW. I interpreted it as not exactly heaven but as a "Waiting Room" outside time and space, independent from the actual time of death or even final destination of the characters. I was disappointed by several things in the show, but in general I enjoyed the ride.)

I must also have been excited for some GoT season finale or other, but the show burned me so badly that I can't even remember.

Actually I've been excited while waiting for every single episode of The Return, but tonight I'm quite sad, and what makes me feel better is the prospect of a head-bursting binge and lots of discussion here. (Plus I'm taking notes for a prospective conference I'd like to hold at some multifandom convention. I'm not very hopeful about it because I know only one person who is as passionate as I am - the above-mentioned Hannibal friend - but meanwhile I write.) I'm still reeling from Ep. 16, and for the first time in these months I wish I had more time to enjoy Dale Cooper's epic awakening before it's all over.

It's my bedtime now, and I hope tomorrow morning I'll manage to watch the finale, Tuesday at the most. I wish you all a great TP night. It's been a privilege dreaming with you.

Lost is the closest, but it's half-hearted compared to this

For all these shows that I've never watched, and likely never will, can anybody explain why they're the mutts nuts, in terms of what happened in that final episode; why was it so grand, what was tied up, what surprises happened etc?

Silly.

Lost had a disappointing ending, but in the duration of the show, there was one bad/filler episode (the bugs episode).

It's hard to even compare them right now bc we have no idea how the Return finale plays out.

Lost and peaks are head and shoulders the most thought provoking/HAVE to follow what goes on shows I've ever watched.

Hi Yam,

Agreed.

Don't know if you were on any LOST fora or newsgroups like this one while it was on.  But it is remarkable how similar the reaction of the fervent fans to both superb shows' fractious finales has been.

It's a measure of how emotionally invested one was (and, interestingly, can be) in a TV show.  Which in turn , in my opinion, is a very good metric of how successful it was.

And as is self-evident by this thread, people are still talking about LOST almost ten years later.

I think they will still be talking about Twin Peaks: the Return then, too.

😉

The trouble with most series is by the time the end comes the quality has all be squeezed out.  I can think of a few:

  • Quantum Leap - Made me sad at the time, but was a great ride and ending
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation - Was my sci-fi fix growing up
