I thought Sonny Jim's outburst of "you're my dad! You're my dad" was a nod to Donna's almost identical outburst in the season 2 finale when she discovers she was sired by Ben Horne and grabs Doc Hayward screaming "You're my daddy! You're my daddy!"

This is somewhat counterbalanced with Mr. C's "goodbye my son"

Which also reminds me of the battle between Dicky and Andy over the seed that was to become Wally.

Just some thoughts. Apologies if these had already been brought to attention, I'm new and haven't seen mention yet.

I like that. A lot. Sonny Jim finally found the dad he wanted (Donna had always already had the dad she wanted in Doc Hayward). I suppose Benjamin Horne wasn't much different than a Dougie Jones in his dabbling and inattention to his offspring.

Ahh, yes nice comparison. To further the parallel when Ben is living in his revolutionary war delusion that's like his version of Dale as Dougie  catatonic state...

The Mitchums want to be parents. They're scolding, protective, loving, they provide and say things like, "She would have no place to go."

I saw something kind of sad about this Sonny Jim comment.  He would rather have someone that was a cardboard cutout of a real dad more than the guy that had been part (or not) of raising him for the totality of his life to date.  As a dad of a 9 year old boy I found this a sad interaction for his upbringing to date.

But in a week or so's time, this barely-able-to-speak cardboard cutout's expression of fealty and compassion and legitimate paternity resonated with the kid.  Kids know their dad.

SJ's sire was only good for schtuppin' the local trade, basically.
