It certainly seems like he did something awful, and that drugs were involved. Hard to know beyond that!

When he he was fighting with Becky in the trailer home, didn't he say to her «I know what you did»? What the hell did they do?
I believe it is Becky related... and that he knows that after what he has done, there is no way back. So I am probably wrong ? but I do believe he shot or somehow tried to kill Becky... regardless if she actually is or not dead.
