I will admit to being disappointed it was Andy.
I really think it should have been Hawk. So much of what had come before in The Return (Hawk and Margaret's phone calls, Hawk finding the diary pages, Hawk finding the Black Lodge portal, Hawk's map) makes it seem like this really should have been Hawk's scene.
If not Hawk, I think it should have been Bobby. They were, after all, following the trail left by Major Briggs. Having Bobby be the one to go into the White Lodge would have been a nice, emotional payoff.
Admittedly, the scene worked fine with Andy, so it's not a huge deal, in my opinion.
Two other things. In the beginning he holds her left hand with his right hand, but during a scene cut, it switches to the left [guessing editorial mistake]. But there's also a scene around 24 minutes in where he appears to fiddle with an invisible ring on her ring finger [his left hand makes an uncharacteristic gesture like it's opening or pulling something off, and his right hand thumb and index stay far enough apart over her ring finger to look conspicuous].
I can see how you thought there may be an invisible ring. Nice observation!

I'm not sure we should trust Andy's time keeping devices. "One time, Andy was even thinking that the clock had stopped and then we realized that we didn't even know what time it was."

My first response is, because Andy is vacant and therefore easily inhabited.. and ok I need new glasses but it almost seemed like something entered him in that scene, in the end with the smoke. But, the other three men may very well have had similar experiences as when asked "where did we go" Hawk says "I don't know".
Maybe Andy is the new vehicle for the giant instead of the old porter who works at the hotel and him breathing in the smoke was him accepting him
I like this theory. It may hark back to the porter's "I know about you" comments. Maybe he had a similar experience as the London Cockney Geezer and the Fireman inhabited him many years ago.

DL, I think, wants very much to defy our expecations. I agree, it would have made SENSE for it to br Hawk, especially (I still want an explanation for his trip to Gleastonbury Grove at the beginning.
I have to think, though, that this was more than just a "ha ha, gotcha" moment for him. Let's see what the lasting impact is in the final four.
Bobby, Andy & Hawk have all played their part so far. All true men. I wonder what role Sheriff Frank Truman has still to play.

I am sticking with my "pensieve" theory about the smoke and the dome. At t he same time, Andy is given explicit information in a way that no one else has (see the thread about oblique clues and info). No "remember 430" or "there is a man in a smailing bag" for Andy. He is mainlining information and insight.
Is it that Andy is too clueless for clues? I don't think that's it. It was him, remember, who realized that the owl cave petroglyph was a map.
I am coming back around to Andy's heart. We have not seen him cry at a crime scene yet in the return, but clueless though he may be, he is Pure of Heart.
As for purity of heart, I'm not sure why Andy is any more pure than Hawk. He is naive though--much more child-like. So it makes sense he's a more "empty" vessel than all the others.
Also, it just makes real good story composition for Andy, whom we saw crying at the very beginning (of the pilot), to end up being being a big hero. And Lucy was one of the first folks we saw in the sheriff's station, so put Andy and Lucy together to be big heroes. .....
I suppose Andy's crying says something about his empathy, which is now reflected in his holding of Naido's hand.
As for the white vortex in TP vs the black vortex in Buckhorn, I had assumed the white one led to the White Lodge (and Fireman), but Cole was looking at a portal to the black lodge (which spits out murderous Woodsmen).
I've been wondering why nobody put a jacket over Naido. A naked woman is lying in the middle of the woods in October. All the guys are wearing coats. But nobody covers her up. They had a couple of minutes to do so.

It was weird, especially since they are trained law enforcement officers. It seemed to tie in with the memory loss, though. It looked to me as if they were all confused and not thinking straight from the moment they got there.
