I'm kind of with you. It sounds like she is written out of the story. But as I've mentioned before, it's distressing that she's thus far being treated like she never existed. Of course, there has only 2 brief segments with any Hayward. Perhaps we'll see more of Gersten. Perhaps she will mention her long lost sister Donna who moved to the Andes and became a monk or is dancing the pole in Atlantic City. SOMETHING!

Well except for occasional local color stories, the show Isn't really dealing with that earlier Twin Peaks world. At first I missed it, but not any more. Donna's story line got too caught up with James's filler scenes toward the end, and the character seemed to lose purpose.
Maybe Donna is a trans man now and goes by the name Paul.

And yet they've shown James....THRICE!
And of course we have a fairly well-developed Bobby-Shelly storyline. And the beginnings of one for Audrey. Twin Peaks feels weird, ahem, to me without a "Best friend" thing happening.
And it could have been nothing more than Frank asking Doc Hayward how Donna was doing and Doc responding with a "eh, you know" or "same ole same ole."
I dislike James because he abandoned Donna on the side of the road when she told him Maddie was dead. He's still a jerk in the Return--that girl he likes is married. Lara Flynn Boyle's character got shabby treatment in Season 2 and became an actor with no role to play. The paternity issue really didn't change that--too little, too late. I agree, though, that the Donna in FWWM was the more engaging of the two.
One theory that's going around is she died after James had his motorcycle accident. While I don't miss her character, it would be nice if they'd explain what happened, even if it's just a brief remark.
It seems to me that the writers couldn't figure out what to do with Donna after the Palmer case was resolved. Kind of like Audrey: they couldn't come up with a decent character arc after they dropped her storyline with Coop.
And yet they took the time and effort to recast her for FWWM so it's not like she's one of the intermittent mid-season 2 characters that faded away into obscurity.
We still have 4 parts left to make mention. Keeping my fingers crossed.

James and Shelly haven't changed much.
James was very unlikable after totally ditching Donna. When I was a kid watching this show, they really seemed like high school students, and to me the anguish and sadness they all felt also felt real to me. I could understand James losing his cool and going over the edge emotionally. Donna had done some shady stuff with Harold, and acted very possessive of him with Maddy. Imagine what that would have felt like, to constantly have this girl in your face who looked exactly like your recently deceased girlfriend. I don't know, I felt bad for James and Donna.

If this were true, then Shelly easily could have said "James is just quiet since he got in that motorcycle accident with Donna. That was so sad, losing Donna that way."
