does that have some sort of hiking or camping connection?   Or was there another reason Andy advised to do this?

i think maybe the soil grounds the four to jack rabbit's palace and thus, this dimension. when they return from wherever the vortex takes them, they all reappear (in woodsmen-esque fashion) to that place.
