So, in 1969, I was 11, and the Beatles were my life. My consciousness had fired into being at pretty much the same moment that they had, and expanded with theirs in that explosive 6 years. I was (and am) utterly obsessed.
And when the rumors hit that year that Paul had died in a car accident in 1966, was replaced by a look-alike, and that mysterious, obique clues had been planted in the albums to reveal a glimpse of the truth to the initiated, my mind was blown in the way that only an 11-year-old mind could be blown.
I remember the first time I managed to play Revolution #9 backwards, turning the table backwards with my finger (making it sound even stranger) and hearing what for the life of me really did sound like "turn me on dead man", and being chilled and excited right down to the bone.
I heard that if you called the phone number that could be discerned from turning the cover of Sgt. Peppers upside down, you could hear a strange garbled message about Paul (of course, deleted by the time we all found out about it). The stars on the cover of Magical Mystery Tour were said to contain a code- Paul's black rose spoke more clearly. The symbolism of the cover of Abby Road, the fold out poster from the White Album, the clear declaration that "here's another clue for you all- the walrus was Paul (we had all learned, lf course, that the walrus was an inuit symbol of Death).
I was obsessed. I had dreams. I remember being afraid of going in the basement, because I thought I would see the decapitated Paul (that was what had happened, of course- he blew his mind out in a car), holding his head in his outstretched hand.
I was filled with the sense that there were layers of unknowable mystery underneath mysteries, that to see beyond the hints and suggestions would bring one to a truth that was too big to know.
(I was 11).
And I realized, while talking to my son last night, about how utterly, joyfully filled up I feel in being so caught up in Twin Peaks, that THAT is the feeling, and it is so deeply resonant for me, speaks so deeply to something inside me, what drives me- to see a glimpse of a deeper, stranger, scarier reality that lives just beyond our reach in this one.

MJ Gilbert, I remember speculating about these Beatles mysteries as well. My other favorite was the soap opera Dark Shadows. By today's standards it was rather silly, but it was very important to me. Watching Dark Shadows both frightened and enlightened me. I bought my first tarot deck, and began learning about other realms and thinking outside of my limited horizon. When I read your post, I realized that my enjoyment of Twin Peaks is just the same as you describe. I realized that this way of thinking has persisted for many years, which makes me different than many of my peers. I'm anxiously awaiting tonight's episode. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
