Anyone who thinks Episode 13 was a dud needs taking to see a big dog.

There was more than enough to keep the wheels turning, plenty of the usual Lynch/Frost "exposition" (ha ha) and superb acting.

I really like the way things are going with DougieCoop; there's a lot of interplay and wheels meshing, right across lots of different characters and story threads.  The scene with Sarah "watching" tv was supremely creepy, particularly because she didn't seem to realize the fight scene was looping.  Audrey's scene was bloody marvellous, with so many "what the hell" moments, it was classic Twin Peaks.  I also wonder if Ed is going to get involved in the Jack Rabbit's Palace business, what with him being one of the Bookhouse Boys.

Of course, I'll be royally hacked off if these things aren't resolved in some way but for now it's a fun ride.

Only complaint was James' song, but somehow a part of me KNEW that was coming.  Literally right before we put on the episode, I said to my wife:

"Can't be worse than last week (Episode 12).  If James' and his gloved friend get up on stage to sing that stupid song, we'll know Lynch is telling us to stop watching and that he's trolling  the world."

Then the song comes on.

I agree, this episode gave a lot for us to think about, and it was superbly done.

I don't really understand the hate for DougieCoop, especially after the last few parts. Even if the scenes take up a lot of time, they are shot through with atmosphere, Kyle's acting is phenominal, and it ties in with a lot of other things. Besides, now we have Candie, and she's getting more screentime/acting in, so if that isn't good, I don't know what is.

And what with the aforementioned new involvement of Ed, and part 13's absence of Carl, I hope this points to them both being involved in this same thing. TBH I would go for a whole episode of Carl and Ed just chatting over coffee and cigarettes. Maybe call in Jim Jarmusch to co-direct a special...

Enjoyed it more than any other part (as part of the bigger film), except for the double part "pilot". This stood out: music during Mitchum's opening, Sizemore's performance, magical Sonny Jim in the gym sequence, silly-arm-wrestle-one-punch-Richard-looking-on, subtle red room moments, the mighty John Savage, thematic consistency, the psychology of remorse, the undignified realities of Norma's situation, how the ambiguous time-line impacts interpretation, Jacoby-Nadine reunion, Sarah-boxing-short-film, Audrey psychodrama, James evoking more emotion on stage than the professionals, dear Ed, overall narrative progression (payoffs & setups), & humour (coffee that bad, eh?).

Impossible to appreciate on a single viewing.

This episode didn't blow me away. But it was a damn fine episode.  Creepy, funny, heartbreaking and confusing. Ticks all my Lynch boxes.

Right with you, Dr. Therapy. Great episode, much to ponder, the song was a wonderful trolling tribute, and a thumb in the eye, to us, which I love, something is VERY up with Audrey, a touching family reunion at the Farm, and what the hell is going on in the Palmer house?!

So important to watch without reference to any of what we HOPED or THOUGHT might happen, and just enjoy the ride.

Can we acknowledge that people have differing opinions, and not attack them for it, or call them out about it?

For what it's worth, I thought episode 13 was ok. Certainly liked it better than episode 12, but I'd rank it as middle-to-bottom-half of this season so far.

I have road both sides of the Dougie wave.  I have been ready for it to end, then start enjoying it again.  I am back in the, "okay, let's move on" stage again.

I had predicted a few weeks ago that next week would resolve the Vegas story line, but not so sure now.  I guess that depends in my mind at the chances our J Edgar friends make a connection.

Everyone is now on the way to Twin Peaks after Mr. C got his coordinates, that is, except Dougie.

Agreed, re: Dougie wave.

As for everyone now on the way to Twin Peaks... well, except for the husband & wife hit team. Look out, Dougie!

Right, Matthew. But (from my end) it is quite difficult to keep an open mind about damning faint praise when you're awestruck and cosmically grateful for the unlikely opportunity to watch TPTR.

Oh, definitely!

Ultimately, I'm enjoying the overall experience, but that doesn't mean I shut-off my critical faculties to it. People very rarely like something (or someone) 100%.

Again, though, I am someone who didn't really get into the original Twin Peaks. My spouse was a huge fan, so I've seen bits & pieces of it. When The Return started airing, I grudgingly agreed to watch it with him, and have been hooked ever since. It is just different enough in scope, production, story, etc. from the original show that I love it!

But, I gotta be real... I don't really give two flips about Norma's RR Diner franchise. That scene was pure boredom for me. My spouse loved it.  🙂

Matthew,

I think all of us have elements of the return or original we didn't love.  For me, the story was the Lucy love triangle.  I also find that the creators and I have very different taste in music.  To be kind, let me just say in the return I could do without any of the roadhouse music scenes.

What would you choose?
