James sang his song!
Realized this last night: Last time he played the song Maddie saw Bob afterward. Does chapter 14 open with another frightening scene on par with Bob taking over the camera frame? We get lulled into a trance soothe song and then get scared out of our pants in the next.
BOB appearing after James is never accidental, he is 'white surface of the black within'. Directly before Leland/BOB appears as the killer in the original series, we have James consoling Donna, telling her the death she caused doesnt matter, that 'everyone is black within', everything is great as it is and nothing should be done about it, then getting her back into feelings, the view then shifts to Bobby who knows something is wrong, but doesnt know exactly what(like Agent Cooper who was there looking for the killer with the log lady).....James is like Leland/BOB's self-justification, he killed Laura, caused all kinds of harm, but free to kill again, feel-have fun again, even though it makes everyone run, 'everyone is black', no reason to beat yourself up about it, this is 'how the world is'. Actually James acts as if a natural demi-God is justifying brutal ignorance and immersion into tyranny/nature as a path to salvation(just giving it a minimal 'white' gloss, believing that this will someday lead to salvation, necessary to believe in order to corrupt the world, promise of savior in God that never comes, like Walter telling Norma that if she 'tweaks her pies', ruins her 'story, things will be just fine, somehow an irrational force will make everything great, etc.), the green bounds(Mike and the ring, Dougie, natural pagan demi god) which stop the black/white/no stars from violating their tyrannous rule. Black needs white to sell the idea of salvation in order to operate, get people to ignore the irrationality and injustice they are committing, not to mention ruining themselves(Mikes arm and BOB deal and trade garmanbozia over the green formica table, ruling the world) etc..... Check out this scene:
James just acts by taking the solution and using it to justify the tyranny of nature's random and violent momentum, just stating it where it doesnt fit, as if ignoring the world and provoking people into direct engagement; the 'green'/state of things does not provide for love/desire/justice(look at Audrey and what happened to her going to the roadhouse, etc., it hid her 'story of the girl down the lane', her desire, she had to disengage with this back and forth repetition in order to re-discover it). The world is becoming more unjust, inhospitable to desire, etc., while James just sells the fact that people have genuine striving as something produced by this tyrannous world that is taking it away over time.........., getting people to wear the ring and not question BOB/Mr. C, etc. by playing on their emotion and feelings, while betraying it for narcissism(like with Laura)
Everything is not alright, James. Not time for 'ice cold colonials', not party time, BOB is partying here........
Rewatching the Julie Cruise scene, if she isn't the final musical guest on part 18 then this whole Return will be for nothing.
I couldn't resist.
Makes sense in a way(although the kid in blue velvet here would probably be closer to someone like Agent cooper, hastings, or anthony sinclair, ones who were actually trying to break up the close cycle of direct repetitive enjoyment/violence(James can easily be seen as a secret BOB/frank booth). Unlike the kid in blue velvet, James is always emboldened/unfazed at the same time as the criminal kingpin/psychopath(Mr. C here and BOB in the original series) is at the height of their power, they feed off of each other and trade garmanbozia, both love the world/formica table this creates, unmoved by the brutality and not challenging it; the woodsmen need a white surface to cover the black within.....its not by accident that James was on one side while BOB/Leo/Jacques et al. were on the other side of the trap which sentenced Laura to her vicious tragedy. James was supposed to be Laura's way out, but could have cared less about her problems(just told her, those problems arent real, your alright, dont worry, like Walter telling Norma to not worry about compromising her pies). James is Mike/Dougie, while Red is BOB/Mr. C. James had a tenderness for the world in which BOB roams freely, a world in which he roamed freely and successfully as an 'easy rider'/Dougie/California man who is irrational and just 'going with the flow', at the expense of several lives.......James gets people to put on the ring for Mr. C with false hopes of salvation...
Although the image I would use would be the one from FWWM, where the crippled Mike is forced by the left arm he cut off to admit he still wants garmanbozia from BOB's killing, to give into participating with BOB in consuming the garmanbozia from Laura's death. Also worth mentioning that in this episode we had James and Mr. C at the height of their powers, while Dougie and Mullins/Mr. C were also at the height of their powers, and humiliating the hero Anthony who was risking his life to save Dougie and break the deadly mafia tribal warfare. Could have easily been James in Mike's place taking garmanbozia from Laura's murder(burying her broken heart then enjoying the consequences, using it without any sorrow to seduce Donna and Maddie), James made Lauras death into a 'romantic' party in which he seduced several girls/women, tore up lives leading to several deaths as 'easy rider'/California man.....when BOB has fun out in the open, Mike and James secretly have fun, like the normal father leland turning into a killing beast:
Funny you said that - I just realised that James' 'mean & moody' expression reminded me of Rocky Horror's pouting & posturing. Well, minus the gold lamé trunks...
Those trunks would work so well on James.
I can already hear the howls of rage from a certain Bowie-phile among us...
And no, James did NOT sing his song. He lip-synced to the same damn recording that he lip-synced to in the original scene. What lazy-ass....GAH!
Okay, breathing. Finding the happy place...Ed burned something immediately after, so at least there's that. He might have burned something a bit bigger and more satisfying, but it's okay. It's all gonna be okay.
Let's hope he was burning the only copy of James' song.
I’m really not sure why there is such a hate on for this song – its creepy saccharine nature seems perfectly Lynchian to me. Did it make you squirm? Mission accomplished!!
