Watch it again, the gothic eye make up and blank looks on the backing singers are suggestive of something.

It means they've been lobotomized and turned into zombies from having listened to that song over and over and over and over.

BTW Deputy Sam, my friends Band is now talking about doing a doom, thrash cover.

I didn't get 'cool'.  I got 'has no shame'...
I think the Jesus & Mary Chain could do a decent cover of it - lots of feedback & completely lacking in falsetto!

Who was the girl crying? Clearly a reference to Donna crying during The World Spins in the old series (my favourite TP scene) and the two zombies on backup vocals indicate Maddy and Donna are dead.

The girl crying was Renee, who we saw at the Roadhouse with Shelly and Hannah in Part 2.  Agree with the reference to Donna crying at the Roadhouse.  But the fact that James is singing with two different backup singers 25+ years after he sang the same song with Donna and Maddie really doesn't shed any light at all on the fate of Donna -- and it certainly doesn't mean she's dead.

Watch it again, the gothic eye make up and blank looks on the backing singers are suggestive of something.

If they're anything like the backing singers we sometimes had with us - The Harpies - the makeup goes with the territory and they're probably thinking "At least nobody in the crowd is yelling at us to get our tits out fer the lads".  Sadly, some of our audiences were somewhat less than enlightened in their attitude towards women.  Tellings off were given to certain members of the audience, from time to time.

The girl crying appeared at the end of episode 2 during the roadhouse song, she was sitting at the table next to Shelly and her friends drinking, then James began to gaze at them, while Red gazed at Shelly.  Another woman at the table told the crying woman that James is weird, then Shelly insisted he is cool.

The question I have about this.....in the latest scene at the roadhouse where James is performing and this woman is crying and drinking wine, the crying woman at some points looks across the table she is sitting at the talks to someone there, who is this other person?  Another woman, James' rival, who?

Also, what is the significance of that roadhouse announcer now appearing again for James, when he only appeared before for NIN? That announcer seems to be linked to Mr. C's ups and downs:  during the NIN song(shes gone), Mr. C was being killed(nearly), now after James song he is back in full power(shes back, Lauras back, donna and maddie).  Mr. C back in power, killed the one who tried to kill him(Ray), and Mr. C even now 'wants' again(he said 'I want him' about Ray), then the accountant of the farm asked him if he needs money after he had gotten a hold of what he wants, time for Mr. C to gamble more?........

I'd like to hear a version with the falsetto emphasized but darker in tone. Perhaps Martyn Jacques and The Tigerlillies will do a cover someday.

That would be amazing!  I had forgotten about them.

Actually watching the scene tonight made me realise that what was cringe worthy with the original scene was actually Donna and Maddie, not James.

Didn't ANYONE like the original scene???  I thought it was dreamy and surreal and just so David Lynch.

I liked it a lot. The 50's style music, the very simple lyrics that speak of profound feelings, with the "forever" part touching on eternity. The subtle, almost nonexistent backing vocals. The fact that the song is about two while a lovers triangle is brewing between the three singers. My only complaint would be that James doesn't look like he's really playing the guitar. But he's trying at least.

It suggests they are goths

Well, my Thai wife, who does not have the greatest command of English (but loves Twin Peaks very much, similar in ways to Thai soap operas), loves the song "Just You" and from time to time tries to sing it. It fits a sort of 50's genre of music.... even if you cringe, it may be a worthwhile cringe.

I could not stand James and Donna in the original TP, and I barely tolerated Bobby (I changed my mind about him thanks to The Return: now his original scenes feel much more interesting). I warmed towards Audrey only slowly. When I first watched TP I was not far from my teenage years, and these teenagers felt utterly fake to me. Maybe it was the age of the actors, maybe I just had no chemistry with them (James' face gave me an Uncanny Valley feeling, and I hated Donna sexy-confused squint). On rewatching a few months ago, the James soap opera made me tear my hair out. I watched FWWM for the first time in the same period and I related much more to Laura and DoppelDonna.

This said, apart from my personal feelings towards Always Cool James (I was glad to see him again after all, a welcome touch of nostalgia, and I was in stitches during Just Youuuuuu), I think we should try to consider the Roadhouse numbers like a part of the narrative, just like Lynch's use of sounds. Just look up the lyrics of any song such as those of "the" Nine Inch Nails or Rebekah Del Rio; even just the title of The Chromatic's "A Violent Yet Flammable World", one of my favourites, evokes the brittle quality of Twin Peaks, slowly unravelling from the inside. From this point of view, "Just You", despite all its emotional baggage for old-time fans, fits perfectly in an episode which so much solitude in it - Sarah's, Big Ed's, the lack of connection between Bobby and Shelly - or, on the other hand, the random but warm scene between Nadine and Jacobi.

I did! And I cringed all the way through it (and the original version)
