Why are there no pets in Twin Peaks?

I'm sorry if I've asked this before here (can't remember), but doesn't this strike you as odd?

We've heard some mention of pets from time to time; i.e., the bird that was witness to Laura's death and that Leo assassinated; or the casino lady informing DougieCoop that she "got a dog" after Mr. Jackpots changed her life.  And of course we get chopped of dog legs and discussion about then with the Warden.

But we see NO interaction between people and pets in the entire series that I can think of.  And this takes place in a rustic, rural town (for the most part), and a trailer park.  Settings you would expect to be inhabited by unbridled dog/pet enthusiasts.  This is small town America.  Everyone in small town America owns a pet of some sort.  Heck you can half picture Sheriff Truman coming to work every day with his trusty "best friend" riding shotgun, or Carl having a friendly Labrador at the trailer park.

And yet....none.  Notta.  Zilch.   Only passing references.

Who in America has ever seen a trailer park without dogs everywhere?  Or a town with a crazy log lady, but no crazy cat lady?  Not even an emotional-support-chinchilla to be found.  Sarah Palmer didn't seek to fill the void in her life from the deaths of Laura, Leland, and Maddie with a friendly goldfish?

Just an odd observation.

The woman in Buckhorn, who lived in the apartment complex where Briggs' body (and Ruth's head) was found, was walking her dog.

But I had to think about this and, though I could be wrong, I don't think we see pets in a lot of shows. They used to be a staple in American sitcoms during the '50s, '60s and '70s, but after that... not so much. Frasier is one of the outliers post-'70s. And with drama programs, we really don't see a lot of pets, either.

So, I don't think it's just a Twin Peaks thing. Pets are notoriously difficult to work with. And a lot of actors have this mantra (sometimes jokingly, sometimes not) about not liking to work with children and animals. So, it doesn't surprise me we've only seen one human/pet interaction in Twin Peaks.

Although we don't see the pets, there are enough to keep a decent-sized veterinary clinic in operation. Waldo the mynah's file wasn't a simple task to find, so there must be a lot of hidden pets in the town.

One could make the same point about children.

A frogmoth and a horse, anyone??

My guess about this one is that the presence of pets would break the required omnipresent tension of the show. Too distractive, I would say.

A parrot, a dogs paw. They all end up dead.

You're right. And like the animals they usually wind up the subject of some tragedy (runover, or forced to witness their father's execution).

It's obvious if you think about it.  What do you think Jerry eats to stay alive as he stones out around town?  Got to get killer (and I mean killer) munchies!

Sarah probably would have eaten it.

We also don't see people doing a poo, yet they probably do a lot of those too behind the scenes 😉

Sorry I couldn't help myself. I'll get my coat.

We do see Coopper having to urinate, tho. More than on most tv shows or movies, I'd say.

I would figure most animals would have the good sense (and animal instinct) to get the hell out of that crazy town, especially after Wally's tragic assasination (although I did read that he may be coming back possessed by Bob.)

What about Sarah's llama?  Just because it's hiding in the Kitchen doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

There are plenty of animals at the Lydecker Vet Clinic. That place is packed. In addition to taking over Laura's duties with Meals on Wheels, Donna volunteers at the clinic cleaning out litter boxes and such for homeless llamas, she is also giving English lessons to the drawer knob Josie Packard resides in. She's so busy we never see her anymore.

All of the animals in Hawk's map are running.......
