I would normally agree with you about strange number hypotheses like that, however, this season is filled with numbers that have important meanings (430, coordinates, 253, 3-15, and of course hidden codes in airplane windows and the Lynch/Frost logo).  So any hypothesis is interesting to consider.  I just want Agent Cooper back quickly, so episode 15 works for me!

Last 5 minutes of the last episode:

Original Cooper wakes up in his bed in The Great Northern. Sees bathroom mirror shattered. Grabs his recorder, as we're back in 1991 and there are no smart phones yet. "Diane, I had the weirdest dream. It was year 2017 and I was working at an insurance company. Also, apparently I've hit my head on the bathroom mirror. Weird."

That's pretty well on my list of things that the ending won't be (along with any tidy explanations of all the weirdness and wrongness - alien invasion, other dimension, or drug hallucination, among other speculations). I also don't think we're going to get some sort of Manichean show down.

I so, so hope that Pieter Dom isn't right and "What is your name?" isn't said to a recently reawoken/reintegrated Dale Cooper in the very last few seconds. (With no answer, of course.)

Part 17's "The past dictates the future" sounds like rather a flat platitude, too much of a common truism (even though we have seen quite a lot of the past being repeated), so I suspect there will be something unusual about the delivery or context.

I'm imagining some weird dreamscape or Lodgescape for Part 15, though whether that means we'll get Coop back then is quite another matter.

I think most of us imagine building up to a dramatic and suspenseful finale but who knows. Maybe Lynch will decide to upend convention again when it comes to the structure of the final chapter.

On Reddit somebody pointed at a Donnie Darko style finale, where the past is changed to change the future.

Donnie => Dale

Gretchen => Laura

I slipped and hit my head on the mirror. It struck me as funny. 🙂

When I first heard the title for Episode 18 revealed, I imagined it being asked to Cooper, implying he won't wake up before then.  As much as I love Cooper-as-Dougie, I really hope we get Cooper back before the finale.  Just so we get to spend some time with him.

I hope it's correct, as I'm fearing that we're not going to be seeing the real personality of Special Agent Dale Cooper any time soon.  I'm surprised that Lynch is being this cruel to viewers actually.  Having Kyle in one 20 second scene, having a baseball thrown at him, with only 6 episodes left, is really kind of cruel.  We've all been waiting patiently to see Twin Peaks' greatest character finally emerge and be himself again, and now with the Episode 18 title released, it looks like it won't happen until then.

Now, if there was a confirmed Season 4 in the works, this long drawn out plotline of Cooper's return from the Lodge would work well.  But all of us probably assume that this is the last Twin Peaks we are going to get, so for me at least, it's been hard watching Dale stay catatonic.

IMO Lynch and Frost aren't being cruel. They're telling a story and it needs to be done a certain way. Like a lot of viewers I want to see more of the old cast, and some of the changes haven't been pleasant, like what happened to Coop and Audrey.

But it's like a no win situation for Lynch and Frost. If Coop came back quickly and the other characters are the same, I'm sure there'll be some complaining that DL and MF took the easy way out.

They'll say "why bother with S3 if the characters are the same?" "This is fan service". "Lynch sold out" etc. That's what many thought of the X Files revival.

Remember that when (and if) Dale gets his mind back, he is not going to be the happy go lucky, positive guy we remember anyway. How could he be? He's been stuck in a crazy limbo for 25 years. He would most likely resemble a confused Mr C. So maybe it's best he doesn't come back.

Even if and when he gets his memory back, he will be a very, very changed man.

The exception here is if he gets back to old Coop, but can't remember the events past entering the lodge. He may become a young Coop stuck in old Coop's body. Now that would be daft!

I think all of us are saying things like "David Lynch would have sold out had he brought back the old Dale Cooper" only because we're 12 epsiodes into an 18 episode series, and we still haven't had Cooper back.

If someone told us BEFORE we started watching Twin Peaks Season 3, that 12 episodes in, that Special Agent Dale Cooper has been in a catatonic state since the beginning, and was still in that state, with no sign of his coming out until episode 18 (title: What is Your Name) we would be apoplectic.  We would have been saying, no that's impossible.  Any other character sure.  But Cooper, it would have been unthinkable.

But now, it looks like Lynch and Frost have decided from the beggining to not utilize their main character.  I just wonder how that conversation between them would have went:  "Yes, this is going to upset a lot of Twin Peaks fans, but it's artistic, and creative, and let's do it.  No Cooper.  Kyle will only play his doppelganger and Cooper as Dougie as catatonic.  Let's do it, this is where the story needs to go."

I get how a lot of Twin Peaks fans have accepted this decision.  It just seems so cold.  And that's to fans of Twin Peaks.   I think that Showtime must have known that they weren't going to have a lot of new viewers entering the world of Twin Peaks now if they hadn't been fans already.  It's still amazing to me that they gave Lynch and Frost that much money to film 18 episodes of a TV series that was never going to get ratings, and was only going to appeal to people like us, and let's be honest, we're in the majority.

Again, I'm thrilled that Twin Peaks came back at all.  And there is so much about it to love.  It's just hard to accept that Special Agent Dale Cooper won't be making an appearance.

I still believe that Coop will make an appearance. I think Cooper was shown in the teaser driving at night, though there is the possibility that it might be in the last episode. It would be disappointing if after 25 years we see him for only one episode, no question.

Cooper has turned into Laura Palmer. She was the central character in the original run. She was not there, but it was around her the story revolved. We did see her in flashbacks and dreams, but it wasn't really her. Kind of like how we see glimpses of Cooper in Dougie.

Hey Damien.  Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

I totally hope you're right, although I have this depressing thought that that scene in the trailer you mentioned, could be Cooper's doppelganger returning to Twin Peaks, dressed as Cooper.  I hope I'm wrong, but I'm predicting that the last episodes will involve the opening of the Black Lodge in the sycamore trees, and that the doppelganger will want to be there for whatever nefarious reasons he has.

Even if Cooper comes back before the finale, his disposition won't be the same as it once was. I hope I'm wrong, but the Cooper we knew back then is probably gone for good, just as Audrey is longer the same girl we knew.

I'm still amazed that this was the direction that Lynch and Frost wanted to go.

Good point about the guy possibly being BadCoop (he has tried to impersonate the real Cooper before), though I'm hoping it's GoodCoop headed to TP to stop BadCoop.

I think BadCoop's plan has something to do with unleashing Mother and destroying Laura and the White Lodge. It will be up to Coop and Laura to stop this. This would presumably lead into a "battle" of some sort, but given the narrative structure of TP, I can't see how this can take place without a sudden shift in tone.

Yes, there are so many loose plot threads, I wonder which ones Lynch and Frost will tackle:

"I want this." - Cooper to Darya

"Find Laura." - Leland to Cooper

A screaming Laura being forcefully taken somewhere.

The disappearing Argent Box.

The New York mystery Box.

The girl from 1956.
