To keep everyone, including the Mitchums, guessing until it was opened. Had it been a regular pie-box, it would have been obvious.

Mike made the one brother dream of cherry pie, and then guided Dougie-Coop to get the pie so he wouldn't die.

"Don't Die!"

I had the same thought but why would he want to keep them guessing? He doesn't even know what's going on.

I don't think Dougie picked out the box, himself. Some higher power did that.

It's a bit of a macguffin just so we and the brothers couldn't see what it was straight away

I am not sure Mike is a higher power, a power. I am slowly convinced Mike is the one that told Mr. C "I will be with Bob again". I think Mike is guiding Coop only so he can be reunited with Bob to regain his glory days.

I was thinking David Lynch, 😉
As for the one wanting to be with Bob again, I'm thinking Dopple-Jeffries, but it's mere intuition on my part.

spot on, at the end of FWWM, Mike is crippled by his own detached arm and takes pain to eat from BOB who has it from Laura's murder.   Mike doesnt want to, but since he cut off his own arm, rather than 'retooling' it to bring justice, he falls victim to the same problems that made him cut off the arm

Why was that scene with the cherry pie so much like the scene in 'Seven' where the criminal brings the head of the police's wife to him?  He was bringing them Candie's head....she died in that final scene, seems to have given up on real love that she was crying about, just stuck in the traffic jam and accepting it, with tears(much like the original agent cooper who had problems with 'philadelphia' and 'caroline' who died tragically because of cooper's romantic engagement....he was also, stuck in a traffic jam and just enjoying the scenery of twin peaks, why he failed and went crazy).  The Mitchums were so caught up in cherry pie, the money, getting Dougie, etc. they watched Canide die over the course of the last two episodes....while they  were going crazy about Dougie, Candie was dying inside, thus Dougie brings them Candie's head.....something died inside of Candie in that final scene, genunie melancholia and tragedy right under the 'california man'/las vegas surface...Dougie is living-death/zombie in that limo, viva las vegas...

From a cinematic standpoint, it's a perfect shape for ambiguity. On a practical level, it's more than likely the store had just emptied a case of frozen pies to thaw and they gave one to Dougie so he wouldn't tip his pie over on the car trip.

Dougie hardly ever takes the initiative. He mostly reacts rather than acts. The box would not have been his idea.

Hi James,

After all, a cube is just a folded cross:
