Am I the only one who thinks that Carl Rudd's character is very different from in FWWM. He seems far more compassionate and caring in this series.

I wonder if something in particular happened that changed him?

You could imagine him having a backstory that turned him into an indifferent, cynical person, prior to moving to Twin Peaks.  Then, getting to know the people around there, finding out what happened to Laura, and how a stranger came to town and changed everything, how it changed everyone's lives.  That could have awakened something in him and made him see there's more to life than being a bystander.

I imagine him as a hard bitten war vet, sick to death of the cruelty in the world.  Hiding away in a trailer park, full of people he didn't know or care about, the lost and the transients, the old and forgotten would just about reinforce everything he didn't like about humanity.  Then, moving to Twin Peaks, where he saw how good people can sometimes be, how much they are prepared to sacrifice and - this bit could be the key - how terrible things can be, beyond all his experience - if they sit back and let it happen.

It's clear he's a very intelligent guy, so maybe all he needed was a push in the right direction.

I'm sure Lynch and Frost recognize it's an old trope; the retired, reluctant, war torn hero, pulled out of retirement in the darkest times.  Maybe it won't be Carl who saves the day but it's good to see him being active, rather than a bystander.

Part of me wants to think that his experience with Desmond and Stanley changed him and he became less bitter.

Then again, part of me also wants him to track down Richard Horne for the killing of the kid and then use his VW to somehow apprehend him.

He's 25 years older. People do not stay exactly the same with age.

And I don't care if it's an old trope (Lynch will do something different with it any way) ... I just love the fabulous Harry Dean Stanton as the 2017 (2016, 2014 or whatever) version of Carl Rodd. He's one of the great treasures of The Return.

Yup but generally, people who are misanthropic in middle age get worse, not better.  People also become more risk averse as they get older, too.

A change for the better is usually due to some powerful external event.

Yes. Some of the most horrid, cruel people I have ever met have been in their 70s.

Was he really so misanthropic? I remember that look on his face in FWWM. He was clearly frightened by something. He seemed to know something, and it may be all about the "missing" experience during his childhood. But it looked like it was more than that. Maybe enough years have gone by that he feels stronger.

For those following the musical notes, it was C-sharp, 4 octaves above Middle C.

Run him over with it and beat him to death with his whistle.

Seriously though, I really wonder what's going to happen to Richard in the end. I'll feel so cheated if he doesn't get his comeuppance.

I hope we see what happens with Miriam in the next episode.

Richard Horne is so irritating!
