Howdy!

I was sad and confused when it ended, too.

I gave it some thought, and a Theory emerged. I've decided I'll rewatch the whole series to confirm it. I'm currently on Season 01 Episode 05. Guess what? So far, so good.

I'll blog about it here: Twin Peaks Rewatch

You're all invited! I'd love to know what you think of it.

See ya!

But what's the theory being tested? I clicked the last no and only read your intent to rewatch and that so far your theory is being confirmed but I can't find what the theory is. Never mind found it. I like it, but, why?

why go through all this trouble to simply tell a tale of a girl who murdered her father's mistress?

Hi! I think you're talking about the first post, the one that also works as a spoiler alert.

This is the latest:

Let me know if this still doesn't work, please.

Hi again, Mtstery Pakhandam! I'm sorry for the delay, I didn't notice the last part of your comments earlier.

Because the intent is to take us through the emotional rollercoaster. It was so well crafted, that we even got happy endings, like Norma, Nadine, Dougie... All the other stories count, they all have a purpose. It's like we're looking at feelings, not just characters and a plot as in traditional movies/tv.

It's about enjoying the ride, not just the arrival. Twin Peaks is the Tragedy genre renewed.

...and I must add. In my Theory, there's still room for another layer, one I don't like much, but may have been authors' intent:

The Dreamer may have reached Evil in Transcendence through the Dream. Lynch likes this sort of stuff. It's not the Judy we get introduced to(because the TP storyline is non-existent), but something that had always influenced The Dreamer in the Real Past, and can only be bridged to when someone is dreaming. This is certainly a topic for a future blog entry...

I may have sounded insensitive in my second to last reply. I mean, a Tragedy driven by sorrow and pain like Twin Peaks is meant to connect to our hearts, not just entertain as a plot. It's Art, and Art makes us rethink stuff in our own lives.

Murder is not supposed to be taken lightly, right? The Violence in Twin Peaks mirrors the Violence in our days. We've become kind of numb to it, and so has Pop Culture. Don't get me wrong, I'm not being politically correct here. And I'm not self-righteous, either.

Everything that looks and sounds dark in Twin Peaks, including supernatural events, derives from Laura's murder.

Besides, the complexity of The Dreamer is the combination of all characters/feelings. If we describe the story as being just a tale of a murder, we're missing half the gems.

Not only did I rewatch "Twin Peaks," series 1 and 2 before viewing series 3, I also brushed up on "Inland Empire" and "Mulholland Drive."  While I immediately see (and hear) a lot of "Twin Peaks" in "Mulholland Drive" I also recognized that Lynch visits and re-visits a lot of themes and story lines.  Exchanging characters, swapping leads, time lines being mixed into movie production and dreams, places and things seen by various characters in different ways etc etc etc.  After re-visiting all of these stories and characters I have come to the conclusion that I am NOT a David Lynch fan, I am a HUGE Twin Peaks fan.  I feel like he is a bad magician as a writer, dream sequences, altered universes, altered timelines...all cheap tricks to allow the reader/viewer to develop conclusions that may or may not be better and more magnificent than he planned.  But then he leaves me thinking about Season 3 Episode 17 and 18 for weeks now...so maybe I am a reluctant fan of his, or maybe I am more of a fan of Mark Frost's.  I keep thinking about it, it keeps haunting me and I don't know how to make it stop...Lucky me.

Hi, Jack Dean!

I totally agree there are recurring themes and methods in Lynch's work.

Twin Peaks is different because it's a series. Actually, there's more to it, Twin Peaks is a benchmark in traditional TV. Its impact still ripples in other Artists' work, sure thing.

But there's a catch: ABC forced Lynch to deliver Laura's murderer identity. This drove Lynch to come up with more Metalanguage than initially forseen - up to the eighth episode of the second season, then he quit except for the last episodes. Ultimately, ABC's interference led us to a very dark road in Season 3.

Had Lynch had the whole series the way he and Frost wanted it to be, we'd have had more of that beautiful landscape crafted on Season 1. The Dream would have evolved in a different way.
