If you are a fan of the films by David Lynch, then this book is essential. The book is primarily "question & answer," not unlike reading a printed version of an interview. Reading the words of any of my favorite artists is most direct, undiluted and uninterpreted; straight story if you will. Forget about most critics and "experts;" they are not in the director's chair. If you are an artist of any kind (filmmaker, musician, painter, writer, etc.) and like to process information on your own, then go for a book like this. Since I am a big fan of Lynch, I have come across several other books about him. Most are good, but some just slam him because they just don't get him, and some actually have the nerve to judge him from their pulpits. After reading this book, you still may not understand (which is fine by me) Lynch's films, but you should come away with a slight sense of how the enigmatic mind of a true artist works. Don't expect things in glaring clarity and you'll come away with gems that you've unearthed from his answers to mostly intelligent questions. The author does a good job with compiling and pacing these interviews, culled from various sessions. His words preceding the chapters are insightful and his round-up of Lynch's resume is thorough. The book is well-edited, thick (approx. 300 pages) and well worth the cover price of around $16.00 for a brand new copy. Apparently, this revised version brings the reader of Lynch up-to-date with discussion through Mulholland Drive (Inland Empire is the only recent masterwork that is not covered as that film was released after this book's 2005 date). It starts with Lynch speaking of his childhood and family dynamic, and goes through the years touching upon and delving deeply into the artist's diverse output. I don't know if there is a more thorough treatment of Lynch BY Lynch out there. Inspiring and reassuring, especially if the reader is a creative indiviual in any avenue of the arts. - ROBT.
