David Lynch Says Twin Peaks Could Continue, But A New Season Would Take Years To Make

David Lynch is leaving the meaning of Twin Peaks entirely up to you: “What matters is what you believe happened.”

In support of his “Small Stories” photo exhibition currently on display at the Belgrade Culture Centre (Kulturni Centar Beograda) in Serbia, David Lynch participated in a public Skype session projected onto the cinema screen of KCB’s jam-packed theater. It marked the first public event where he would talk Twin Peaks since the perplexing finale on September 3rd.

While taking several questions from the audience face-to-face, the director declined to reveal the fate of Audrey Horne, whose very last shot in Part 15 was both abrupt and confusing. “What matters is what you believe happened,” he clarified. “That’s the whole thing. There are lots of things in life, and we wonder about them, and we have to come to our own conclusions. You can, for example, read a book that raises a series of questions, and you want to talk to the author, but he died a hundred years ago. That’s why everything is up to you.” In other words, and as noticeably demonstrated by the Twin Peaks discussion forum, we are all detectives.

Whether there will be a 4th season of Twin Peaks is too early to say, he told the crowd, adding that if the series would continue, fans would have to be extremely patient. Again. “It took me four and a half years to write and film this season.”

I’ll see you again in, say, 2.5 years?

Parts of the Skype session are embedded below. The featured image was taken from a video David Lynch filmed to promote a fundraiser for the David Lynch Foundation.

You know, this is why I respect Mr. Lynch. He’s going to do what’s in his heart and mind and present it to us, but he doesn’t feel beholden to anyone about it. He wants us to enjoy it, but in the end, if we don’t, he’s OK with that too.

Showtime, please make it happen, and please don’t make David wait too much. The cast isn’t getting any younger. Neither David. Neither I.

  5. Twin peaks COULD continue

Another season WOULD take years to make

That’s why it SHOULD be a feature film instead

I for one would love that feeling of being in the cinema lights out sound blaring with fans of something both wonderful and strange all around.

    • Rob B. says:

That would be cool, but there are far too many loose ends for a standard two hour film. May an epic series of films a la Lord of the Rings?

      • There is no way he would tie up the loose ends in any future Peaks work. Any continuation would surely just shatter the “plot” even further. I don’t think he should do it. He should do something new next.

    More, more, we want more!

  7. I’m extremely pleased to find this site. I want to to thank you for ones time for this fantastic read!! I definitely liked every bit of it and i also have you book marked to see new information on your site.

  8. I hope David Lynch will consider doing it as two feature films that would wrap it all up and finally resolve the major mysteries, in a way that would still allow some ambiguity and new challenges for the imaginations of fans.

  9. I would love to see a season 4, but not for the same reasons evrybody seems to. I don’t want “all the loose ends to be explained”. When Fire Walk With Me came out, almost everybody looked at it in the wrong way. Expecting it to explain what TP left open. But what would be the interest of that? The point of sequels (in Lynch’s world) is to open things we thought closed, and the marvellous third season did exactly that. Fire Walk With Me wasn’t meant to close anything, but to show that we didn’t know what we thought we knew. Etcetera.

If I recall correctly, Mr. Lynch had planned a series of movies about Twin Peaks and its mythology, but the panning of Fire Walk With Me put the kybosh on that. Maybe there’s a new chance for him to revisit those projects?

    Then get started.

  11. Horation says:

Not really fussed if it did take a few years but I really think he should just do tv movies for it, My mum loves Twin Peaks but she probably be dead by the time the next season coming out then.

  12. Kelley Jarvis says:

I waited 25 years for the third season, so waiting a few more years would be no problem. Season three was worth the wait. Any David Lynch production is magical. The gift of a fourth season of “Twin Peaks” would be better than coffee and fresh cherry pie.
