Bill Hastings’ “The Search For The Zone” Website Exists

Welcome to The Search for the Zone. Here you will find writings, links, and other bits and pieces as we find the time and inclination to post them up. This site is a journal of my (and my partner’s) fascination with multidimensional/time travel, dark matter, the afterlife, etc. We are interested in a lot of things, but these are the main topics of discussion…

Yes, just like Doc Hayward’s Skype account, Bill Hastings’ website called The Search for the Zone as mentioned in Twin Peaks Part 9 EXISTS! The domain name was only registered in November 2016, but we’ll play along and assume the Geocities-style online journal (“with occasional contributions from Heinrich Viegel”) has been online since 1997.

Head over to theseachforthezone.com and come back to share your findings on the forum!

As of December 21, 2020, the website appears to be down. However, the domain name does not expire until 2022.

UPDATE: Some findings so far.

  • The visitor count seems to reset at some point, close to 3605. UPDATE: The counter has been turned into a countdown and it’s counting down the minutes until the day of the Twin Peaks finale (September 3rd, 2017).
  • At the bottom, click the second set of trees for a short video ad featuring Trouble’s Snake Eyes.
  • The guestbook is moderated and whoever is managing the site just approved dozens of fan entries. The new entries were removed.
  • The coordinates at the bottom of the page (44°30’44.8″N 103°49’14.6″W44.512439, -103.820707) lead to a location near Spearfish, north of Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota. Click them, and you’ll see a distorted video of The Convenience Store as seen in Part 8, possibly from a driver’s perspective.

UPDATE: Someone visited these GPS coordinates!

Listen to the sounds

vortex.wav

Around 00:19, somebody seems to be saying “help!” Is it Dougie, Bill Hastings, or someone else? And what’s that music towards the end?

electrical_interference_1.wav

electrical_interference_2.wav

This is clearly the sound you hear when the Woodsman is wandering around asking for a light.

  1. Well, I’ll be..!!

  2. Open Source says:

That sunlight over the Twin Peaks Sheriff Dept was beatific.

    Foreshadowing good things.

    Tim Roth not Phillip Jefferies!

    Another killer Matthew Lillard performance.

I want to go scuba diving.

  3. The Man Who Knew Too Much says:

    Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
    Violent souls, but only
    As the hollow men
    The stuffed men.

  4. “On Electricity” by Nikola Tesla (found on one of the links on the site) was one of the most profound things I’ve ever read and I highly recommend it. It definitely ties in with the electricity symbolism, as well as war and convenience. I feel this piece was highly influential on this season.

  5. The Man Who Knew Too Much says:

The voices – can you hear them?

The search for the zone, the 3 WAV files.

Electrical Interference 1 – The underlying voice of ??????

Electrical Interference 2 p The underlying voice of the One Armed Man

Vortex – Another chant from the Woodsman

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper

    • I played around with IE2 and it sounds as though you might be right, although I couldn’t get anything out of the others. So now I’m wondering whether you’re guessing this stuff or have some sort of insider knowledge. Intriguing…

  6. Chris Casner says:

Electrical Interference 2 is also the sound of the giant wall outlet Cooper uses to get back to earth.

  7. mrwerdna says:

WebTrips?! That brings back some memories. WebTrips was a character driven search engine back in the early days of Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash.

  8. Fantastic retro web! Brilliant.

  9. The Bog says:

I thought that I had heard “Help!” as well at that point in the vortex.wav, but just this latest replay made it sound like “Coop!” to me, almost in a Cole-esque sort of way….or it could just be my mind wanting that!

  10. Got a light? says:

there is a video in the source code at http://thesearchforthezone.com/media/MVI_8465.mp4 no idea what it means

  11. Doug Cooper says:

Holy crap that site just blew my tiny freaking mind!! Some interesting links in there. I don’t have the patience to follow every rabbit hole there but I’m certain there’s more to be discovered through the links provided.

  12. The first WAV sounds like what we hear when Cooper is falling through non-existence. I’ll have to go back and listen again to both the episode and this file.

  13. Bob Mussini says:

Well …. probably someone has mentioned this here before…. Pardon:

Yesterday I remember that a dirty-black Woodsman first appears walking by a morgue´s corridor behind Lieutenant Cynthia Knox …. (at 16 min of episode 7)… We can hear the “electrical_interference” sound two times, when he shows up.

  14. Thanks to Serial Killer Library and Killer GPS

    Morning guys!
Some will already know this story, but I hope it’s new to some of you.
    Have a killer day ? – Amy

Sand Lake, a resort community in Upstate New York, reached 90 degrees on July 7, 1908, when 20-year old Hazel Irene Drew walked along a remote section of Taborton Road. Heavily wooded, nearby Teal’s Pond was popular with squirrel hunters, campers and fishermen, but it was no place for young women to be alone at night.

As Hazel walked at approximately 7.30pm she encountered two men: Frank Smith, a teenage farmhand she had met several times, and Rudolph Gundrum, a 35 year old local who was giving Frank a ride in his wagon. She briefly greeted the men before continuing her walk. This was the last confirmed sighting of Hazel alive.

Four days later Hazel’s body was found bloated and and floating face down in Teal’s Pond. She had suffered a blow to the back of her head with an unknown weapon. The heat combined with the water made identification difficult – she would eventually be identified by her clothes and the fillings in her teeth.

To this very day, Hazel’s murder remains a mystery. Her case has become folklore, and her ghost is said to haunt Teal’s Pond.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s a boy named Mark Frost used to spend his summers at his grandmother’s house in Taborton, quite close to the location of Hazel’s murder. His grandmother used Hazel’s story as a cautionary tale about walking alone at night.

Mark would remember this story well as an adult. In fact, when he and a friend, David Lynch, sat down to create a television series he used Hazel as a source of inspiration. Hazel Drew became Laura Palmer, and the town of Sand Lake became Twin Peaks. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

  15. Who else noticed that the visitor counter on the website goes backwards?

  16. Trina Jones says:

    CANDIE!!

  17. I was among the early visitors to the website. I thought I had explored it thoroughly, but when I just went back I clicked on the link for older blog postings and was redirected to the strange video of songs playing on a radio with distortions on a video screen. http://thesearchforthezone.com/#donate

  18. The coordinates that used to be at the bottom of the page now seem to have disappeared.
